This requirement works for some students and punishes others. Many of the students who succesfully pass through the school maths gateway will quickly forget the topics they studied. In some cases, it's just as well, since the "mathematics" they are taught will be a collection of manipulative tricks that avoid real math understanding -- like the FOIL pseudo-algorithm for avoiding the binomial theorem.Hacker points out the "myths" and "delusions" that keep our present broken system in place. THE MATH MYTH and Other STEM Delusions presents a detailed argument for alternatives to Algebra as a required school subject for all students. In its place, Hacker suggests a course in "Numeracy" he has taught in the Mathematics Department at Queens College, New York. The topics in his course include data analysis related to political representation, finding numerical patterns that indicate fraud in income tax returns, patterns of consumer purchasing, and other examples of quantitative reasoning. He even shows how to approximate a value for the mathematical constant Pi, using basic arithmetic.Hacker is not "anti-math," and he describes mathematics as a subject of "inherent beauty." However, he does not see this beauty being communicated to the many frustrated students who would like to pursue careers that do not require math. Hacker does not blame math teachers for the unreasonable pressure put on students to grasp the abstractions of what he calls "academic math." Instead, he faults an elite group of experts -- Hacker calls them "the Mandarins" -- who advise on local and national educational policy, including the "Common Core" state standar. The data Hacker cites include high failure rates on school exit exams, statewide proficiency test results, community college remedial math class statistics, and other measures. Although people who have been successful in math class cite their own progress as anecdotal evidence, Hacker claims the facts show that algebra, far from being a pipeline to success, is "...a barrier [that] ends up suppressing opportunities, stifling creativity, and denying society a wealth of varied talents."Naturally, advocates of required STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education will disagree and point out that Hacker's background is in political science, not mathematics. But this description of school math from a different viewpoint can help readers determine whether we are making educational decisions based on facts or myths. As a math teacher myself, I have become very concerned about how much is being required of students at lower and lower grades. What was once a requirement of a seventh grader is now required of a fourth grade student. This book exposes many of the fallacies of our current educational system as it applies to the study of mathematics. I would like to see this book as required reading for all educators, especially those who are responsible for setting statewide curriculum requirements and college entrance requirements.

The Math Myth: And Other STEM Delusions is a must read that challenges almost all of America’s present educational shibboleths: the push for universal standards that stress STEM-ready education in high schools, especially the emphasis on the requirement, in the name of rigor, that all students achieve some degree of abstract mathematics proficiency. Along the way, using data, he excoriates the Common Core (especially its mathematics component) and the overuse of standardized tests to judge both student competency and teacher effectiveness. It was an eye-opener for me, and I recommend it to anyone who has even the slightest degree of interest in education and educational policy.His primary point is that abstract mathematics – proving of theorems in geometry or factoring polynomials in algebra or doing calculus integrals – does not teach skills that most students need. While that fraction of students who do go on into science or advanced engineering might need that level of mathematics, most students, even those who go into technical fields, do not. Instead, the mathematics requirement presently in place in the Common Core functions as an institutional barrier that is, to a great extent, the reason that many students fail to complete high school, or cannot into college, or, given the math requirements at colleges, fail to complete their degrees. It is, in his view, a costly disaster for our society, wasting human capital on an exorbitant scale.Hacker is a social scientist, not a mathematician, and he uses numbers and data and statistics professionally, but he argues that it is actually bad for our society to require abstract mathematical competency of all students – most of whom will never use an iota of it again.One of the more intriguing bits is his demonstration that the SAT and ACT standardized tests (a boon for the companies that supply them) actually discriminate by gender, arguing that the emphasis on speed in the math components of these exams favors males. I am not yet in a position to either accept or reject his argument, but it merits more than a cursory glance. It has, at least, the ring of plausibility.He argues that the national policies toward mathematics education are largely set by what he calls the ‘mandarins,’ a collection of mathematicians (not mathematics teachers), supported by the political punch of slogans like STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and by large corporations that want to hire STEM-ready graduates, even though they represent only a small fraction of all students.I have long agreed that the current emphasis on high school calculus is misplaced. My preference has been for students to learn statistics. But even here, I got a wake-up call. Hacker argues that the ‘mandarins’ of statistics make the typical statistics course into the same kind of abstract and theoretical enterprise that the calculus people do. Instead, he argues for developing what he calls “Numeracy,” sufficient familiarity with numbers and numerical reasoning to permit intelligent interaction with our complex, modern society.Stephen D. I like this but the kindle addition is hard to follow. Especially when putting to shuffle the cards it keeps returning to the same one. I wish I would have just bought the book.

This is my favorite purchase of all times on Amazon. As an educator in a project based learning system these cards revolutionized the creativity and innovation in our projects. Most people believe that you are either born creative or you were not. Nonsense. Clients keep his card and show others.Ray Kroc, after buying the first McDonald's stand, stored his spuds in the basement but couldn't get the french fries to taste right. The original McDonald family had exposed their potatoes to desert winds that cured the potatoes. SCAMPER Solution: "Modify the storage area. Kroc cured the potatoes by installing large electric fans in the basement."Kroc also employed the Rearrange It approach to differentiate his hamburger stand from all the other box-shaped burger joints. Presto: Golden Arches!So to breathe fresh air into your team's ventilating system (now...there's an idea!), and delegate this creativity tool to a team member.P.S. Where do you dream up your best ideas? One company, referenced in Thinkpak, created a special room with educational toys, games, videos and bean bag chairs--and included baby photos of every team member; a reminder that we are all born with creativity.

Few projects take the time to truly brainstorm...most of what happens is what I call spit-balling an idea, which the tip of the iceberg. They are 56 cards with a 64 pages instruction booklet, here's the fun part, the booklet is full rich experience with the card deck, it makes you start thinking with the scamper on your everyday, it has creativity study cases and a lot of scamper made decisions in the past, like why does the hotdog comes with a bread, the answer is that a frankfurt sales man and his brother-in-law a baker where trying to find out a way to make the frankfurt sales more profitable, because at first they sell it in a plate so people wont burn their fingers with the hot frankfurts, then they tried with cotton gloves, but they were to expensive and some times the customers walk away with the gloves on, so they ask them self, how we can COMBINE the sausages to make people wont burn their fingers when eating it, the conversation between the sausage salesman and the baker was: "what if i baked a long bun and slit it to hold the frank? then you can sell the franks, and i can sell you the buns. who knows, it might catch on." and the hotdog as you know it today was born.The cards have scamper questions so youll be driven into the subject problem to the solution evaluation, then you decide if its worth or not.This is by far one of the best gifts someone has given to me...

I loved Thinkertoys, but this is a great portable version I can pull out on my lunchbreak or in preparation for work meetings. I have the reputation for being one of the most creative people on staff, partly thanks to this!

Linda A. Sharp, J.D., received her juris doctorate from Cleveland Marshall College of Law and practiced corporate law in Ohio for seven years before continuing her studies at Kent State University in the areas of sport management, higher education administration, and sociology. After teaching in Indiana University's sport management program, where she also held a joint appointment with the law school, she is now at the University of Northern Colorado as a professor in the UNC Sport Administration graduate program, teaching sport law and ethics. Anita M. Moorman, J.D., is an associate professor in Sport Administration at the University of Louisville where she teaches sport law and legal aspects of sport. She has a law degree from Southern Methodist University and, prior to her academic pursuits, practiced law in Oklahoma City in the areas of commercial and corporate litigation for ten years. She also holds an MS degree in sport management from the University of Oklahoma and a BS in political science from Oklahoma State University. Cathryn Claussen, J.D., earned her Master's degree in Sport Studies at the University of Iowa and her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Had to purchase this as a textbook for a masters sports law class, and I love it. It has great real world examples to explain sometimes complex legal issues and the case studies and problems we worked through are a big help. Excellent textbook!

This book takes a look a legal aspects that sport managers may need to consider. Best book for taking the technical layers and complications of law (sport managing students are not law students) and brings them to level that sport managers can use. The only better way receive this information form Dr. Sharp herself.

A little wear and tare, but that is obviously to be expected. Exactly what I needed for a great price!

This book gives great information on Sport Law. It isn't dated and does a good job of explaining the information in the text.

I give 3 stars for effort. But honestly if your going to be doing tutorials about jewelry making of any kind please print color pictures not black and white. I figured it would look like the front cover but it’s not. If you want more ratings the pictures are kind of fuzzy and hard to follow with because their in black and white the brain dosent process it well especially as a learning tool. It should be bold and colorful to spark people’s emagination and inspire them to want to do this for hours. Honestly I can learn all this on YouTube. But it will be nice to have an actual hard copy for traveling where there is no internet reception.

Well this is my first book and I love it and hope others will learn from it too. I love making my hemp jewelry and today made my first hemp purse from knots!

As one who can often be blind to the beauty of my surroundings as I meander through each day, I wanted to like this book very much. And I indeed found it to be helpful in places. However, I also found it to be in places perhaps a bit too neo-paganistic and neo-pantheistic for my taste. Instead of helping me to appreciate God's handiwork in creation and grow in my relationship with Him, the focus all too often seemed to end on the objects themselves and the individual’s inward journey. In summary, I enjoyed the book, but had to filter what I read with a critical mind. Perhaps a second read would be help me. I recommend Rigney's The Things of Earth and older works by C.S. Lewis will will perhaps be of more benefit to the reader.

Celtic Christianity at its best. Each chapter Is dedicated to an element: water, wind, earth and fire. Each chapter includes quotes about the element, discussion of the element and how it applies to our life, questions for contemplation or journaling, detailed instructions on praying with each element, ideas for Lectio Divina, and ends with a prayer written by Paintner. I would classify Water, Wind, Earth and Fire as devotional.I read this book because I feel drawn to Celtic Christianity. It was a joy to read, Paintner writes some beautiful prose, and it nourished my soul as well. I highly recommend it.

This book completely blew me away. I am a practicing Christopagan and I'm always looking for books that blend the two systems. I took a chance on this book and it did not disappoint. Beautifully written and love the different prayer techniques discussed!

Rough Justice is a very accessible, well written, and well researched analysis of the ICC's first decade-plus of operation. Bosco draws on interviews with many key diplomats and ICC officials as well as extensive documentary evidence to explore how the court has found its way in a world of state interests and power. The analysis is thoughtful, and the book manages to be interpretive and analytical without getting bogged down with social science jargon. Highly recommended for anyone interested in international human rights or the role of international organizations in world politics.

This book makes an important contribution to our understanding of the strategic games that are played between Great Powers and those heading international organizations. While much has been written about principle trumping power during the ICC negotiations, this book is the most in-depth accounts of the Court since those negotiations. It offers a sobering analysis of the Court's ability to pursue international criminal justice given its dependence on others for the resources needed to carry out complex investigations and prosecutions. Even better, the argument and writing is incredibly accessible. I assigned it for both my undergraduates and graduate classes.

It starts at the beginning explaining the microscope basics and takes you up to making your own slides. My only problem with the book and, it's not something that would keep me from buying it is, it's out dated. It explains everything based on decades old information. Would be nice to have it wrote with today's information and technology. I purchased this book for my 10-year-old grandson. He’s a smart kid but it was definitely over his head. My husband is a doctor who has had considerable experience with microscopes and he agreed that, while the content of this book is excellent, it’s too advanced for young ones.

It's been so many years since I first learned to use a microscope I bought this concise book to refresh my memory. I'm now getting more use out of my laboratory microscope

Good guide especially for those with limited microscope knowledge. Presented in an easy to understand format and is a good guide for my kids.
