"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1992""This is brilliant stuff, both in its broadness of sociological scope and its voluminous collection of data from a vast number of sources in the three cities."---Scott Lash, The Times Higher Education Supplement"A very significant book indeed. . . . A systematic detailed analysis of the three largest urban economies in the advanced world."---Peter Hall, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research"[A] high-powered and at times horrific book. Sassen shows how dangerously city life has been affected by the influx of employees of the multinational firms which move into major cities and virtually colonize them, riving even greater wedges between the rich and poor." (The Observer)"A landmark study in the political economy of cities."---Anthony King, Newsline"The most detailed and sophisticated anatomy yet published of the functioning of the new producer services sector in the global economy."---Mark Levine, Urban Affairs Quarterly"The implications of Sassen's research . . . are sobering."---Rudolf Klein, Times Literary Supplement"An exciting and persuasive work. It incorporates a herculean research effort."---Susan Fainstein, Journal of the American Planning Association"A multi-disciplinary tour de force that should be read not only by regional economists but also by urban geographers, sociologists, and planners." Sassen aims to - unpack the concept of "the city" (p. xviii) - as a unit of analysis in sociology and economics from a global perspective. The scope of this endeavor is quite staggering and she has to bring an number of different fields under the same conceptual umbrella in order to capture the elusive character of 'the city'. Her method is the painstaking analysis of a huge amount of data from a vast array of sources. This might seem unnecessary to some people who are more interested in bold visions of the future á la Manuel Castells or Antonio Negri. The thing about Castells or Negri though is that you need a leap of faith to interpret the world according to their views. Sassen is more boring to read but one can always rely on her providing the data leading up to her conclusions. This is crucial to anyone wanting to take a stab at the interdisciplinary phenomenon of the global city and use availible data for comparison. The thorough research foundation of the book makes it easy to link the issues to areas that otherwise would be quite far apart such as urban planning and service management. Personally I think the most important message is that place and location matters maybe even more nowadays than it used to when production and consumption was explicitly bound by the physical limitations of our world. In all I think that this book is a must read for anyone even remotely interested i urban matters. It's a bit tough to get through though and the visual presentation of the data could have been better, hence rendering the book a four rather than a five star grade.

This book is a profound empirical assessment of the changes that have taken place in the world economy since the sixties and the emerging role of core cities therein. One of the more significant changes in the world economy has been, according to the author, that manufacturing activities have been spatially dispersed while at the same time production-related services such as finance, accounting, and management have been spatially centralized. It is this 'combination of spatial dispersion and global integration [that] has created a new strategic role' [p. 3] for such cities as New York, London, and Tokyo. They have become global cities, i.e., 'postindustrial production sites' for a variety of command functions that integrate the global economy in the post Bretton-Woods era. An immense volume of data is presented to substantiate the hypothesis that these three cities, diverse as their historical, cultural, political and economic settings are, have undergone similar transformations: their economic base has shifted from manufacturing to services, in particular to producer services (chs. 5,7); agglomeration economies in favour of these global cities induced the urban hierarchy to become more top-heavy in the U.S., Great Britain, and Japan, respectively (ch. 6); and their urban social structure is characterized by increasing income and employment polarization since there is complementary expansion of jobs at the top-level and in the informal economy (chs. 8,9). Quantitative indicators, almost by definition, do not suffice to vindicate such far-reaching conclusions. Some of them rely on a questionable notion of what is normal, e.g., the indicators of these cities' 'disproportionate share' in worldwide capitalization of equities, due to their stockmarkets, or the 'overrepresentation' of the financial industries' assets and income in these cities [pp. 171-179]. But what is normal about the value of equities and banks' assets being proportional to city size? Other indicators do not necessarily support the hypothesis forwarded. The conclusion that 'the salient difference' between the three global cities and other major cities 'is the extent of concentration of the producer services and finance' [p. 326] is undermined by the observation 'that the producer services as a whole have grown rapidly over the last decade and that they have grown more rapidly in the countries as a whole than in these cities' [p. 138]. The evidence thus suggests that the 'salient difference' may be a temporary phenomenon and can hardly serve to characterize global cities in general. However, these are minor objections against some empirical arguments in favour of the Global City hypothesis. The author, Professor of Urban Planning at Columbia University, provides much more qualitative and quantitative evidence to substantiate her case. It is the outcome of work for years, in collaboration with an impressive number of other reserachers and institutions. And apart from the attempt to empirical verification, there is also a theoretical framework which supports the Global City hypothesis. The study contributes to an emerging literature on' the social geography of advanced economies' [p. 251] in the classical tradition of political economy. It deviates from orthodox classical or Marxist theory in that the iron law of falling profits is modified by the notion of capitalist 'regimes' or 'models of growth' which are able to restore profit-generating opportunities on a global scale. Fordism has been the last fully articulated regime, charcterized by 'capital intensity, standardization of production, and suburbanization-led growth' [p. 331]. The present work on global cities thus amounts to search for the new 'form of economic growth' and its sustainability [p. 12], based on speculative finance, shift to a service economy, and inner city growth. Even if one does not share this theoretical background and the preoccupation with questions of how durable a particular phase of capitalism is, SASSEN's book proofs tiffs perspective to be a useful device to focus a study of rather complex issues. Moreover, there is abundance of material which should be of interest to the more orthodox-minded economist. Just to mention two examples: the paradox of financial market deregulation being motivated by the need of governments to finance ever larger deficits [pp. 88, 118]; or descriptions of processes in global labor markets [p. 31 ] and urban economics [p. 126] which extend COASE's logic of the firm, though not mentioned, to new fields of study. This is clearly an outstanding book, an authoritative study of the subject and yet stimulating reading for further theoretical and empirical research on major cities and the world economy.

This is a sad book. History was very unkkind to this woman. Just when she thought she completed here masterpiece, a book that was supposed to ensure her tenure and fame and all the things that a sociologist may want, everything blew up in her face. Her theory in the original version went like this; Why oh why are there huge concentration of functions in Tokyo, London, New York, when so much IT allows easier communication and remote office and all that? Why do these cities grow, when all the production and other functions gets shipped off to backwater countries?Well, she said, IT allowed the separation of production and management/development. That's why managers remain in cities with their high pay, while actual sweat work goes to third world child labor under measly wages. But why did the cities grow bigger? Well, because cities are the new production centers. Management and stuff requires a lot of legal services and accountants and other services etc that are much easily available in the cities. That's why all those management stuff accumulated in the city. But aren't those activites just leeches to the actual job? They don't create any new value, do they? Aha, she says. But they do! Look at all those financial innovations, like hedge funds and derivatives and stuff! Look how much money they are making! They are not leeches, they are creating new values. You gotta throw away your old ideas about the economy! Only cities can produce that sort of new financial products, and that's why London, NY, Tokyo are growing! There was another brownie point. Her theory went very well with shallow anti-globalism arguments. Managers stay in NY/London with high pays, while at the factories half way around the globe, workers suffer forever under low wage. But exactly when the first edition came out, everything changed.First was the collapse of the Japanese economy, that took down Tokyo with it. Her theory had nothing to prepare or explain this. What happened to the new production? What happened to all those financial innovation? Why didn't that work in Tokyo? In the book, Sassen tries to answer this using various ad-hoc excuses, but the more she does it, the less convincing the original proposition becomes. So it wasn't THAT important, after all? All those theories of yours were only subordinate to those other stuff that you never mentioned before? And yes, what about those innovations? Collapse of LTCM and huge hedge funds etc. since the first edition made finance less glamorous. Arbitrage does increase some efficiency of the market, which does create some value. But they were not the major new "product" to sustain the world. Her theory about the separation of production and management wasn't so hot afterall. Look at Asia, look at China! Concentration of production functions REQUIRED many management and design / development functions to go along with them. Also, the factories did make the workers richer, and as a result, much of Asia and China really became better off. There are dicrepancies, and differences in earnings, but its nothing like what Sassen had described. It's amazing that NOTHING of here original theory remained. In this second version, she tries to pick up the pieces, but they are too completely destroyed to be picked up, and the effort is almost painful to read. I wonder why she even bothered with the second edition. It's not a book worth salvaging in 2001, and it's hardly worth reading, except as a sad but amusing look back at the strange ideas of the past.

Outdated material but there are a few good schematics that can help if you get lost with reassembly. Some of the cleaning tips are helpful as well. Nothing in this book is mandatory for a Z owner.

Photos are all black & white and not very good quality

Very useful information. I have a couple of complaints about the book:1. The binding is weak. Pages come loose from the binding and fall out of the book.2. The photos are too small and often too dark to make out detail. The caption will say to look at such-and-such and you can't see it.3. A suggestion for future editions. One of the main reasons I loved "How to Keep Your VW Alive" was that, unlike every other manual including this one, the author would tell you exactly what tools were needed so that you could crawl under the car with precisely the right wrench in hand. That is a real timesaver.

This book is great if you have an early Z car and need some pointers on how to restore/refresh your Z. A good mechanic would figure a lot of this out by using the factory repair manual, however there are tips and tricks here that the author gives you based on his hands-on tear down and rebuild that will save you time, money and effort in your pursuit of the perfect Z car. Some of the info is outdated but that's to be expected with anything in print. Updates on his info can always be found with a Google search.

THE go-to book on how to restore your Z car! Easy to follow steps. This is a no brainer.

helped me with my Z

I had a copy from before and used it on a Datsun Z Car and gave the old copy to the buyer of that car. I wanted another copy to possibly work on another car.

a great source of knowledge, tips, and pictures! came plastic wrapped and in great condition. thank you so much!

I've had this book for awhile, so don't remember what I paid for it, but I'm sure it was worth it, because it's loaded with useful information for anyone who wants to make full use of yard space.Edible landscaping certainly does that, and he tells you how you can do it by showing examples and explaining how you can make up your own plan.If only he would do the digging and planting...but aside from that, if you're serious, this is a good book to read and to keep for future reference. You'll never be sorry you bought it.

Invaluable resource when it comes to planting and designing a nice-looking yard that you can eat. The front half of the book outline basic design and growing concepts, the back half an index of about every edible plant you can imagine with its growing needs, a detailed description, and size and shape information. Pick up a copy, because I'm not loaning out mine!

This book is wonderful. It is the only one I could find that specifically uses edible plantings in landscape plans. I had gotten this from the library first and quickly realized I wanted it for my collection. The illustrations are beautiful and the author gives just the right amount of information on each species.

Nice illustrations (no photos), and good information on each plant such as size, time to first crop, texture - information helpful for both design and production.

Very informative. I enjoyed reading it.

Information on pollination is helpful with information on types of plants and uses. Geared towards East Coast I think, and I am on the West Coast, but helpful information.

GoooooD

It is a wonderful book that bridges the traditional landscape designs and the newer permacultural designs. It is great for those who want to incorporate edible plants in to their garden while maintaining the focus on overall beauty, and do not have the need to maximize their garden food production. Sample designs are mostly formal. It dedicates about 60 pages to how to design your landscape. It gives lots of details in an easy-to-understand language even for the first-time home landscapers. Recommended plants are categorizes by size, which is very helpful. The author spends one page for many of the plants with multiple illustrations, and gives lots of info that are sometimes hard to find in other books. It also covers pruning and disease control.I would've given it 5 stars if I lived in the East coast or even in the Mid West. I live in USDA Zone 9, and the book does not include plants that would do wonderfully here. I also wish that included permacultural concepts. However, there is still much in this book that can be applied to Zones 9 and 10, thus the 4-star.

Da Vinci's Tiger, by L M. Elliott

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up—Set during the Renaissance, when Florence celebrated art, philosophy, and poetry with fervor, this historical fiction title is about Ginevra de' Benci, a 17-year-old married woman who is stifled by societal norms. Then she meets Bernardo Bembo, the ambassador from Venice, who is so taken by Ginevra's intellect and poetic talent that he asks her to be his Platonic Love. In an era where marriages were business arrangements, it wasn't uncommon for wealthy men to bestow admiration upon married women through a chaste romance. To proclaim his platonic love for Ginevra, Bembo commissions her portrait by the up-and-coming artist Leonardo da Vinci. As Ginevra and Leonardo form a profound friendship, Ginevra comes of age in a city full of art, beauty, and violent family feuds. This is an intriguing, albeit leisurely paced, story about a real historical figure, the subject of Leonardo da Vinci's early portrait of a Florentine socialite. As is evident from the book's afterword, Elliott meticulously researched the 15th century to bring alive the affluence, art, and clothing Florence was known for—fully immersing readers in the time period. In many ways, this novel is a feminist piece. Ginevra lives during a time in which the only way for women to study philosophy and art was in a convent, and once married, women had little to no formal education, as they became the property of their husbands. Breaking this mold, Ginevra learns that her empowerment comes from within, despite the limitations put on her sex. VERDICT Add this gem to round out collections skewed toward 20th-century history.—Kimberly Garnick Giarratano, Rockaway Township Public Library, NJ

Review

An exquisitely detailed story of the passionate relationship between artist and muse, whose spirited yet gentle Renaissance heroine put me in awe of just how far women have had to come in 500 years. Beautifully painted. (Elizabeth Wein, Michael L. Printz Honor winner and New York Times bestselling author of Code Name Verity)“Elliott’s novel is thoroughly researched, portraying three-dimensional characters in a lively atmosphere of love and art. Renaissance Florence breathes through this book, bringing readers to a fuller understanding of the portrait, the era, and an indomitable young woman.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))“Rich in historical detail… fans of historical fiction will find Italy’s Renaissance fascinating.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA))“Elliott meticulously researched the 15th century to bring alive the affluence, art, and clothing Florence was known for. In many ways, this intriguing novel is a feminist piece. Add this gem to round-out collections skewed toward 20th century history.” (School Library Journal)“[T]he independent female narrator and the richly drawn portrait of Italian culture will attract history buffs and artists alike to this story behind da Vinci’s first-known painting.” (Booklist)

Based on the muse for one of Leonardo DaVinci's early paintings, DaVinci's Tiger is a historical fiction book with with a feminist twist. In a time when woman were seen as property of their fathers and husbands, Ginevra de Benci Niccolini yearns to be more than a pretty face. Encouraged by her father and the nuns at her boarding school to learn Latin, literature, and philosophy, she is able to discuss artwork with her social circle, which includes the Medicis who control the banks and the artists they fund, which include Verrocchio and his apprentice, DaVinci. When the ambassador from Venice, Bernardo Bembo, declares her his a Platonic muse and commissions a painting of her to be done by Leonardo DaVinci, she and DaVinci decide to make this painting different from the standard. Based on the one line of poetry she wrote that survived the centuries, "I beg your pardon, I am a mountain tiger," Ginevra comes to life in this book as a politically savvy yet strong, morally-sound woman ahead of her time.I loved this book for its historical background and strong feminist undertones throughout the story. Many of Ginevra's words made me think and have stuck with me long after reading this book. I am definitely going to reread this a few more times to enjoy and think about some more.I gave this 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Da Vinci's Tiger is a beautiful, excellent read. I really enjoyed learning about the young poet Ginevra de' Benci--the real-life subject of Leonardo da Vinci's first portrait. Ginevra, as depicted by L.M. Elliott, is passionate, intelligent, witty, and strong. The supporting characters--including Leonardo da Vinci himself--are equally enjoyable, often wise and daring, creative, and occasionally rather hilarious! The novel is also clearly well-researched, and I found myself fully immersed in Elliott's vivid descriptions of Renaissance Florence, its political intrigues surrounding the Medici brothers, and its art and artists. I would highly recommend Da Vinci's Tiger to anyone who likes a kick-butt heroine, history, or art.You will want to visit Ginevra's portrait at the National Gallery of Art in DC after reading this novel!

It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. Not a favorite read as it took forever too pick up but it was good speculation as to a version of how that painting came to be, so there's that.

A fascinating book that sticks with you long after you finish. An intricately woven blend of historical fact and likely fiction.

Awesome read! Captured my attention on page one and my heart by the middle of the book. I was spellbound by the author's incredible ability to describe a world so far in the past - through her astonishing research abilities, she brought the characters to life in this wonderful book as she has in all of her previous historical fiction novels. Can't wait for her next book!

Entertaining historical fiction.

Great book!

Review

“This original and important book demonstrates the inseparability of philosophy and psychoanalysis for any serious attempt to answer a question so profoundly relevant to the very nature of our being that it does not ‘belong’ to any one discipline: the question, as Silverman puts it, of what it means for the world that each one of us is in it. The book has a remarkable clarity; Silverman makes the most complex argument seem like a perfectly natural, and absolutely necessary, movement of thought.”―Leo Bersani, University of California, Berkeley

From the Inside Flap

Combining phenomenology and psychoanalysis in highly innovative ways, this book seeks to undo the binary opposition between appearance and Being that has been in place since Plato’s parable of the cave. It is, essentially, an essay on what could be called “world love,” the possibility and necessity for psychic survival of a profound and vital erotic investment by a human being in the cosmic surround. Here, the author takes her cue from Freud’s assertion that the “loss of reality” associated with psychosis is a function of a disturbance not in the capacity to reason or perceive, but rather in the capacity for world love, the libidinal and semiotic circuity by means of which such love actualizes itself. In an implicit challenge to poststructuralist thought, the author claims that this love is always in response to a call issued by the world—that the world has, as it were, a vocation: its beauty ought to be seen. We must think of our own being-in-the world as a response to a primordial calling out to respond to this beauty. We are, the author suggests, at the very core of our being, summoned to what she terms world spectatorship.Drawing on Heidegger’s phenomenological elaboration of care as the being distinctive of human being and the primarily Lacanian conceptualization of the language of desire specific to each human subject, this metapsychology of love attempts to integrate issues in the fields of psychoanalysis, philosophy, visual culture, art history, and literary and film studies.

Breathe life into your unabridged dictionary, and let it breathe life into you too. Help ensure a future in which dictionaries are of value. For the right person, this is an absorbing, rewarding book.World Spectators is a serious project. If there was anything funny in the book it certainly escaped me, although many of the short examples are light-hearted.You will find, if you succeed in reading World Spectators from beginning to end, that it is filled with outlandish ideas about thought, language, sexuality and how memories are formed, beauty, life, death, and how the world began. This characteristic of these ideas, namely that they are strange, is by itself a simple, natural, and sufficient reason to read World Spectators. Certainly the topics addressed are basic to human symbolic life. So, wouldn't that be another fine reason to pick up a copy? And the strange ideas are not necessarily those of the author, but can be found in Plato, the book of Genesis, the fundamental work of deSaussure, the writings of Heidegger and Arendt, and the well-promulgated thought of Sigmund Freud and the more-than-cryptic Jacques Lacan. All are well worth reading, yet all of them are nearly inaccessible without an apprenticeship. Perhaps World Spectators is the next best thing? For each of these thinkers (or lines of writing, if you will, inasmuch as 'Genesis' is not a thinker per se) is engaged in making sense of what it means to Look. Or to be regarded. And all (all these 'lines') are interested, perhaps fatally interested, in the question, what is a thing? And they are all, in today's terms, non scientific. The accounts which Silverman recounts and examines, which she deftly and carefully plays against each other in as authentic a way as she possibly can (without a considerable amount of further study, I think that you and I have to trust her here), these accounts are not experimental, objectively verifiable in the scientific sense, nor predicted by theory. Is it bad that they're not scientific? You tell me. I'm still trying to figure out whether science makes a difference in this world, so casually is it discounted, disrespected, or simply disregarded. So, what about insights? Just consider the term itself, "insight". Doesn't it imply a "seeing in" to something. Providing an opening into the interior, a line-of-sight through which a look can go. Remember Picasso's erotic line drawings? Hundreds of lines drawn from man's eye to woman's body or from woman's body to man's eye. The line goes in both directions. Objects see us too, an astonishing assertion, which Silverman presents herein, with substantial thought and support. Here are some chapter comments.chapter 1 Seeing for the sake of seeingThis opening chapter is one of the best things about the book, it's really why I decided to obtain and attempt World Spectators, after reading the first part of it on amazon (you can do the same thing). It's a re-thinking of the visual and social aspects of the famous story of Plato's cave. There's something really great about someone who thinks an example through on his or her own, from first principles. It's not just an interpretation, a rendition, or a re-telling. When you think something through, anew, you often get great clarity. I'm sure this is why people are always saying that Kaja Silverman's writing is so clear. If you were to buy this book and read the first chapter alone, I think you would be delighted with your purchase.chapter 2 Eating the bookThis is a wonderful chapter about being-in-the-world, thrownness, and the Impossible nonobject of desire, or 'Das Ding' which Silverman explains in a way that makes rather perfect sense at the time, but which you had best consider well before you try to communicate it to anyone else. 'Eating the book' is, Heaven save us all, a metaphor. The book is the book of desire. In this book, to find out what means 'eating the book', you can turn to page 48. Then 49. Then...chapter 3 Listening to LanguageThe language you will be listening to is the language of desire."When we exteriorize our language of desire in the form of an address to other subjects, it also becomes intelligible to us. We thus find ourselves in a position to do something we could not otherwise do: to claim our disclosive powers."chapter 4 Apparatus for the production of an imageFor me this was the least successful chapter of the book, all about dreams but it was also one of the most heavily underlined, which indicates my view is probably not typical.chapter 5 The Milky WayIn a chapter entitled "The Milky Way", Silverman promises to examine kinship, but strays deeply into highly technical psychoanalytic description of something that, in the end, I was unable to understand even though I passed my eyes across every sentence in the chapter. I very much liked the metaphor of the Milky Way as representing libidinous attention, but felt there wasn't enough actual detail in the rest of the chapter to really lock on to the idea.chapter 6. The Language of ThingsEthics based on desire. What is desire?People wish to see again that which they have seen before. This is presented as non obvious, and as fundamental. I think it is one of the fundamental insights I derived from reading this book.chapter 7. NotesAs usual, a gem in the endnotes: Heidegger's notion of truth expressed in one sentence.Final thought. This book may have a low sales rank, but if you think no one is reading World Spectators, I think you may have another think coming. Before I bought my own copy, I found a library copy of World Spectators, which was filled with avid underlining. Vertical lines signify important paragraphs. Key terms are circled. There are marginal comments in at least 3 different illegible hands. Even the 18 pages of footnotes have many passages underlined. There have been many dedicated readers.Only one diagram appears in the entire text of World Spectators, a series of boxes used by Freud to clarify the relationship between various parts of the preconscious and subconscious mind.

Review

"This thriller’s all of your fav page-turners (think: Luckiest Girl Alive, The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl) rolled into one.” —theSkimm “Both [Gillian] Flynn’s and Miranda’s main characters also reclaim the right of female characters to be more than victim or femme fatale… All the Missing Girls is set to become one of the best books of 2016.” — Los Angeles Review of Books “Extremely interesting…a novel that will probably be called Hitchcockian.” —The New York Times Book Review “Are you paying attention? You'll need to be; this thriller will test your brain with its reverse chronological structure, and it's a page-turner to boot.”  — ELLE “Intricately plotted…Ms. Miranda brings heightened suspense and a twist to this familiar scenario by telling the story, which unfolds over 15 days, in reverse chronological order.” — The New York Times    “Fast-paced and frightening, All the Missing Girls will teach you why it's dangerous to go into the woods alone at night.” — Refinery29 “All the Missing Girls is the archetypal murder mystery, the kind it seems like everyone has been hungry for since Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and Paula Hawkins's Girl on a Train.” — Cosmopolitan.com “A new spin on a classic "missing person" thriller, All the Missing Girls is the perfect read for thriller fans.” — Bustle.com "In All the Missing Girls Megan Miranda leads readers back through the past of a small southern town, enfolding them in a slow, tense nightmare of suspicion, menace, and tangled motives. A twisty, compulsive read--I loved it." — Ruth Ware, author of IN A DARK, DARK WOOD "Fiendishly plotted...Miranda convincingly conjures a haunted setting that serves as a character in its own right, but what really makes this roller-coaster so memorable is her inspired use of reverse chronology, so that each chapter steps further back in time, dramatically shifting the reader's perspective." — Publishers Weekly, starred review "As original as it is addictive, this story puts a knot in your gut from the opening pages. Then, through the wizardry of its unconventional structure, that knot tightens and tightens and will not let go until the final pages—and even then the story continues to haunt you. Vividly rendered, psychologically complex, and narratively acrobatic, All The Missing Girls is, above all, totally gripping." — Tim Johnston, New York Times bestselling author of DESCENT "Darkly nostalgic....Miranda takes a risk by telling the story backward, but it pays off with an undroppable thriller, plenty of romantic suspense, and a fresh take on the decades-old teenage-murder theme." — Booklist   "All the Missing Girls is a smart, suspenseful, and emotionally complex thriller. Told in reverse, this story will make you want to lock the doors, turn off the phone, and read until the last satisfying page." — Alafair Burke, New York Times bestselling author of THE EX "Megan Miranda’s utterly gripping and original All the Missing Girls keeps you off balance in the most perfect way. I was held hostage by the book from the first page to the stunning conclusion. This literally backward tale is a winner." — Lisa Lutz, author of THE PASSENGER and HOW TO START A FIRE

Forget The Girl on the Train. Forget Gone Girl. Forget The Woman in Cabin 10. Forget all the psychological thrillers you've read to date including We Were Liars. This book rivals them all. It made me think of a movie called Momento in that it was written in reverse order. After reading it I actually considered reading again in reverse order just to see how everything fit into place. Brilliant and intense. Beg, borrow or steal this book immediately. Just kidding. Don't steal it. The author deserves every penny she gets for this one.

This book follows the life of Nicolette, who returns to her hometown to help her brother prepare their family home for sale while her father is ill and suffering from dementia. The book is told backwards, from day 15 (after her return) to day 1, which forces you to piece together the puzzle that is the reason behind Nic avoiding her home for the last decade. When her neighbor, who is conveniently enough her ex-boyfriends new fling, goes missing, all fingers are pointed at her and its up to Nic to figure out what happened all those years ago to her best friend and now to her neighbor. Were they kidnapped? Were they killed? Are the two missing girls cases related? She comes to realize that the secrets kept by the town are far more sinister than she had ever imagined. • • • Whilst I enjoyed the book, it didn’t have a huge wow factor for me aside from when everything came to unravel and the truth came out. Although this isn’t going to the top of the chart for me, it was still a good read and one that I may consider reading again but this time working from the back of the book (day 1) to the beginning of it (day 15). I did enjoy the fact that the way this book was written was very original because it kept me entertained for the most part and had me guessing what exactly went on.

This book is NOT in the same league as "Gone Girl". First of all, the story is told backwards which is super confusing. Second, "all" the missing girls are really one missing girl for most of the story, then a second girl goes missing 10 years later. The story line is weak, the characters are weak, there's a lot of musing about old relationships, lots of begging an old man not to talk, it sort of goes in circles and never really gets anywhere. Overall, a disappointment and I cannot recommend it.

Nic moves back home to help sell her dad's house but her past comes back to haunt her. All the lies and secrets from 10 years ago when her best friend went missing starts circling again after the disappearance of another girl.Great characters, plots and twists! Will definitely keep reading this author.

The book is written backwards so be prepared for that. This was chosen by my book club and I found it a good read. But it helped that I had read reviews on it before starting and knew that the book was going to go backwards. My book club felt that it needed to be read in one sitting because if you put it down you got confused if it was days later when you came back.

This book was long and boring! I did not like how it's written in backwards order. It made it confusing and frustrating. I will not be reading any other titles from this author, I feel she just doesn't paint vivid pictures in my mind with her wording. It was hard to connect with any of her characters. Just not a fan. This book was not worth my time. Sorry for the negativity, but it's my honest opinion.

This was my first book with this author, so maybe it was my bad that I didn't care for it. BEWARE SPOILERS- okay so I couldn't stand the main character. She sounds like a horrible teenager, then was upset when her life started to fall apart and things went wrong. She brought that on herself. I couldn't follow things in the story because of all the jumping around on the timeline, and the end...really? The whole time the story wants you to think she's looking for answers on what happened to her best friend 10 years ago...and she is the one who killed her. Now all these years later she leaves a man who loves her, reburies the friend she killed, and winds up with her ex. Read at your own risk, I was just mad I wasted the time.

I could not put this book down! As a mom of two little kids it’s not often I can read a book this quickly but I had to. I could see how the reverse timeline could be confused if you didn’t read the book quickly but if you can it makes total sense and everything is explained. What happened to the rings *spoiler* Tyler’s was found and assumed to be Corrine’s, it’s in the box of evidence from her disappearance and Everette’s was not found, Anneliese took it and it’s either lost along with her purse, that wasn’t found or maybe her brother took it? Things were a little unfinished with Annelieses brother, I thought maybe setting up for a sequel or “spin off”. & the phrase “tic toc nic” came from the pregnancy test. I found all the characters relatable, especially Nic & Tyler.
