Good condition. Love having these paperback scripts for the shows I’m acting in. I do wish there was more room to write in this & the font was a little largwr

I thought it would be sad, because the witty, clever woman gets dementia. But it turns out to be a very charming tribute to the value of a good marriage, which enables the man and the woman to weather disappointments and aging with a kind of deep pleasure at having shared memories that they do not lose. I plan to audition for the role in a couple of weeks. I would love to play this character!

A very good play.

Columbia history professor Adam Tooze, an authority on the inter-war years, has offered up an authoritative history of the financial crises and their aftermath that have beset the world since 2008. He integrates economics, the plumbing of the interbank financial system and the politics of the major players in how and why the financial crisis of 2008 developed and the course of the very uneven recovery that followed. I must note that Tooze has some very clear biases in that he views the history through a social democratic prism and is very critical of the congressional Republican caucus and the go slow policies of the European Central Bank under Trichet. To him the banks got bailed out while millions of people suffered as collateral damage from a crisis that was largely made by the financial system. His view may very well be correct, but many readers might differ. Simply put, to save the economy policy makers had to stop the bleeding. He starts off with the hot topic of 2005; the need for fiscal consolidation in the United States. Aside from a few dissidents, most economists saw the need for the U.S. to close its fiscal deficit and did not see the structural crisis that was developing underneath them. Although he does mention Hyman Minsky a few times in the book, he leaves out Minsky’s most important insight that “stability leads to instability” as market participants are lulled into a false sense of security. It therefore was against the backdrop of the “great moderation” that the crisis began. And it was the seemingly calm environment that lulled all too many regulators to sleep. The underbelly of the financial system was and still is in many respects is the wholesale funding system where too many banks are largely funded in repo and commercial paper markets. This mismatch was exacerbated by the use of asset-backed commercial paper to fund long term mortgage securities. It was problems in that market that triggered the crisis in August 2007.The crisis explodes when Lehman Brothers files for bankruptcy in September 2008. In Tooze’s view the decision to let Lehman fail was political, not economic. After that the gates of hell are opened causing the Bush Administration and the Federal Reserve to ask for $750 billion dollar TARP bailout of the major banks. It was in the Congressional fight over this appropriation where Tooze believes the split in the Republican Party between the business conservative and social populist wing hardens. We are living with that through this day. The TARP program passes with Democratic votes. Tooze also notes that there was great continuity between the Bush and early Obama policies with respect to the banks and auto bailout. Recall that in late 2008 and early 2009 nationalization of the banks was on the table. Tooze also correctly notes that the major beneficiary of the TARP program was Citicorp, the most exposed U.S. bank to the wholesale funding system.Concurrent with TARP the Bernanke Fed embarks on its first quantitative easing program where it buys up not only treasuries, but mortgage backed securities as well. It was with the latter Europe’s banks were bailed out. Half of the first QE went to bail out Europe’s troubled banks. When combined the dollar swap lines with QE, Europe’s central banks essentially became branches of the Fed. Now here is a problem. Where in the Federal Reserve Act does it say that the Fed is the central bank to the world? To some it maybe a stretch.Tooze applauds Obama’s stimulus policy but rightly says it was too small. There should have been more infrastructure in it. To my view there could have been more infrastructure if only Obama was willing to deal with the Republicans by offering to waive environmental reviews and prevailing wage rules. He never tried for fear of offending his labor and environmental constituencies. Tooze also gives great credit to China with it all out monetary and fiscal policies. That triggered a revival in the energy and natural resource economies of Australia and Brazil thereby helping global recovery. He then turns to the slow responses in Europe and the political wrangling over the tragedy that was to befall Greece. It came down to the power of Angela Merkel and her unwillingness to have the frugal German taxpayer subsidize the profligate Greeks. As they say “all politics is local”. The logjam in Europe doesn’t really break until Mario Draghi makes an off-the-cuff remark at a London speech in July 2012 by saying the ECB will do “whatever it takes” to engender European recovery. As a byproduct of bailing out the banks and failing to directly help the average citizen a rash of populism, mostly of the rightwing variety, breaks out all over leading to Brexit, Orban in Hungary, a stronger rightwing in Germany and, of course, Donald Trump. But to me it wasn’t only banking policy that created this. The huge surge in immigration into Europe has a lot more to do with it. Tooze under-rates this factor. He also under-rates the risk of having a monetary policy that is too easy and too long. The same type of Minsky risk discussed earlier is now present in the global economy: witness Turkey, for example. Thus it is too early to tell whether or not the all-out monetary policy of the past decade will be judged a success from the vantage point of 2030.Adam Tooze has written an important book and I view it as must read for a serious lay reader to get a better understanding of the economic and political policies of the past decade.

This is not a terrible book. The chronology is good as is the analysis of international relations and international organizations. The author is especially good at the interlinking of great power relations and the financial crisis. He also has the best single account I have seen of how Russia became estranged from Europe and the US. He is actually capable of seeing the world from Moscow's POV instead of repeating sterile 1980's tropes substituting Putin for the old SU. However, he is hopeless on domestic politics. I could say especially US but that is only because the US and the dollar have such an outsized place in early 21st century finance. His POV is an ACELA corridor mandarin whining about the unwashed rubes in Flyover Country. He had the same blinders in his prior book on the post-WW1 period. Representative democracy requires the technocratic elites to actually explain and sell their policies. A key example is his blaming the incoming Trump administration for dumping the Trans-Pacific Partnership. This ignores two years of campaigning where first Bernie, then Donald and finally Hillary all repudiated the Treaty. To have either of the two possible presidents sign it anyway would have been yet another elite technocratic betrayal of the actual voters. The author seems capable of seeing this democracy deficit, of parliaments essentially told to shut up and bark like trained seals, as regards the EU's treatment of the Club Med countries. Yet when it comes to the US, UK, Germany etc. the voters are to be ignored because there are technocratic reasons why there is no other choice. To advocate that passes from history to political advocacy. It also should be stated up front and discussed instead of dismissed with snide comments about people not fit to govern.

“Whereas since the 1970s the incessant mantra of the spokespeople of the financial industry had been free markets and light touch regulation, what they were now demanding was the mobilization of all of the resources of the state to save society’s financial infrastructure from a threat of systemic implosion, a threat they likened to a military emergency.” (Loc. 3172-3174)Adam Tooze takes the well know Financial Crisis of 2007-08 through its full history of international ramifications and brings it up to the present with the question of whether the large organizations, structures and processes on the one hand; decision, debate, argument and action on the other that managed to fall into place in that crisis period in this and many other countries will develop if needed again. “The political in “political economy” demands to be taken seriously.” (Loc. 11694). That he does.Tooze is an Economic Historian and Crashed: How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World is a wonderfully rich enquiry into causes and effects of the Financial Crisis and how the failing of poorly managed greed motivated practices of a few financial institutions, and their subprime mortgagees, tumbled economies in the developed and developing world, causing events that matched the Great Depression’s dislocation and could have matched its duration, springing from world wide money markets “interlocking matrix” of corporate balance sheets— bank to bank.” A warning he is not kind to existing political beings, the Republican Party in particular “…to judge by the record of the last ten years, it is incapable of legislating or cooperating effectively in government.” (Loc.11704) His criticism is, in fairness, based on technical management grounds, and he does find fault as well with the inner core of the Obama advisors and their primary concerns for the financial sectors well being, rather than nationwide happenings where homes and incomes disappeared. This reviewer’s favorite (not mentioned by Tooze) is the early 2009 comment of Larry Sumners when Christina D. Romer, the chairwoman of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers and leading authority on the Great Depression saw a need for $1.8 trillion stimulus package, “What have you been smoking?”Sumners, Geithner, and Orszag, who favored transferring $700 billion to the banks to offset possible bank failures and such -- became policy. Tooze mentions that by 2012 Sumners was concerned by the slowness of the U.S. economy’s recovery taking, as it did, 8 years to reach 2008 levels of employment. Can an Economic History be an exciting read? Tooze gives us over 700 pages of just that, but much will be familiar as reported news and may be skimmed, and some of the Fed’s expanded international roles very dense in content. His strength is the knowledge of what could have happened, had solutions not been found, and how agreements were reached out of public sight.“… the world economy is not run by medium-sized … entrepreneurs but by a few thousand massive corporations, with interlocking shareholdings controlled by a tiny group of asset managers. (Loc.418-419).Add wily politicians and hard driven bankers EU Ukraine and China you have an adventure.Corporate control is not new -- rich descriptions of its inner connections are.Adam Tooze does this well a reference work for years to come.5 stars

This book has the same content as "75 Years of Marvel" also by Roy Thomas and published by Taschen books. The larger 75 Years book is still available and includes other eras such as the Golden Age, Atlas Age and post 1978, but it is a massive tome and this selected "Marvel Age" volume is more user friendly.

A truly spectacular book with by Roy Thomas, a boy wonder of Marvel who impressed Stan Lee with his letters that led to a job as a Marvel writer at 24. He would eventually become the Editor-in-Chief at a very young age. He is an excellent choice to write about the history of Marvel between 1961-78, as he was there for almost all of it and knew every major and minor player. It is an outstanding hardcover book with loads of pictures, covers, interviews, quotes, back ground stories, and selections from various comics. Definitive.

Exceeded every expectation. Meticulously documented, abundantly illustrated... it is hands-down the most complete study of what I consider one of the most revolutionary periods of any American artistic medium.

Love this book!! Always great to read about the Marvel Comics history that took place before I was born... This book is chock full of awesome details and pics.. I recommend it for everyone!

This is quite possibly the Holy Grail of Marvel BooksQuality on this matches any book, hands down these are the best covers, front and back, color, clarity Marvel history, etcThe sheer size alone makes this book WAY WAY unique.Highly Recommended and SIX True Believer stars all the wayThanks Roy

A thick, oversized tome full of historical text and hundreds of color pictures of Marvel's history, written by the Master. He was actually there! Highly recommended.

Reviewed on September 2nd!Bought this in a comic shop, because, well, there it was, with no postage to pay, and long before October 6th, sorry Amazon, you’re still my first port of call, love ya. Unfortunately, despite being invited to “be the first to review”, I find I’m actually not allowed to review until “the item has been released”, so this information comes a little late to some buyers. It also won’t be flagged as a Verified Purchase, and nor would it be if I had bought it on Amazon.co.uk, which I prob’ly would’ve. Rest assured though, I have it here right in front of me.Anyhow, the book—there’s a lot of good stuff in here, including what *should* be in here, but I can’t help feeling that even at a massive 400 pages, there’s lots of stuff that *could* have been in here. More Kirby, more Ditko, more Steranko, more Colan, more of everything. It’s not a bad book, but it’s not a great book. There’s a sense of skimming over everything, it’s not definitive, and at 400 pages and forty quid, it should be. Also, large chunks of it are reproduced from Taschen’s 2014 book 75 Years of Marvel Comics: From the Golden Age to the Silver Screen, so if you’ve got that, you might feel a bit cheated. Frankly, there are better text histories out there, and better collections of art.I can’t help feeling that it would have been a much better idea just to concentrate on the ’60s/Silver Age, and perhaps end with the ill-advised death of Gwen Stacy, which is pretty much when the dream died for me, rather to then go similarly skimming through the ’70s as well… which could have been a follow-up book, as Taschen recently did with DC. They probably realised there’s no market out there for eulogising the later stuff. In fact, and I’m not being facetious, the best use for this book is as a visual aid to Sean Howe’s Marvel Comics: The Untold story, the events of which it illustrates perfectly (but only up to ’78, obvs), albeit with slightly less contentious versions of the same stories. For example, Martin Goodman’s price-rise wheeze of the early ’70s is acknowledged as the moment Marvel overtook DC in sales, but the text then suggests that this was also down to the culmination of, and recognition for, all the Silver Age accomplishments. But then, why would sales *rise* with the retirement of Lee and the departure of Kirby? This is wishful rewriting of history. As Stan famously said in one of his soapbox columns, “everyone knows there’s more of their kind of people than ours”.Hindsight shows us that, in fact, Marvel’s best days were now behind them, and it was far more likely to be a combination of the abolition of the quota that limited the number of Marvel comics that could appear each month (actually the beginning of the decline, alongside Goodman’s ‘single issue stories’ mandate), the aforementioned 20 cent trick, and the even more drastic drop in quality of DC’s comics. You will find yourself cackling cynically at some of the inevitable spin in this official history, although it’s not quite as glaring as that in the DC books by the same publisher. And, as in those, it’s true as far as it goes. Also, I was surprised at the choices made as to which items to blow up full page and which to print smaller, but I concede that’s purely subjective. However, the choices do inevitably come across as a little, uh, Roy-centric. For example, seventy issues of the Thomas-free Tomb of Dracula, an extraordinary accomplishment by Wolfman and Colan, is dismissed with a thumbnail, albeit the Hulk’s thumb. Twenty-odd issues of the Thomas/Smith Conan, on the other hand…And, a minor gripe, but if there’s one thing I really hate, it’s when comix people put themselves into the comic strips, and this element is really over-represented here. And 1978’s Superman, the first ‘serious’ super-hero film? What does that even mean?Serious in terms of trying to make a profit? Serious in terms of special effects? Serious in terms of content? (I don’t think so!). Serious in terms of guys wearing long underwear and doing impossible things? Serious in spending a ton of money? Serious next to Brando in Last Tango in Paris, or Hackman’s genuine straight villainy in Prime Cut? Any more serious than Kirk Alyn or George Reeves?I can’t even say this is a missed opportunity, because it’s already been done, and better. There’s quite a few of these ‘memory lane’ coffee table books out there now, and if you fancy a wander down the time tunnel, you don’t need ‘em all. If someone buys this for you as a gift, don’t hurl it at ‘em, it’s okay, but for some other options, DC, Marvel, all, others, and both, see ‘all my reviews’.

My husband has been checking this book out at our local bookstore. He loves it!

Love Allende's books but this was not one of my favorites. Sometimes when I read her novels, I am transported and I can't put them down. With this one I found myself checking to see when the end of the chapter would appear so I would have a good stopping place. Not a good sign, but if you love her writing, it is important to see what she is up to now. I'm going to a lecture with her this week. Maybe I will get some better insights into the book...

Facil de leer,no pasara a la historia ni es uno de los mejores libros de Isabel Allende. Lo mejor del libro es la historia de Evelyn la Guatemalteca.

This book is good if you're a college professor. I needed something more straight forward and basic for my ventilation needs. And, for the cost, it was not worth it.

I am a thermal designer of electronic equipment and I found this book to be the only one on the subject that has a very extensive coverage of air flow jets and capture velocity calculations. These topics are covered in sections 7.4 and 7.6 of the book. It provides detailed calculations and formulas that can be used to calculate air velocities under different conditions. I use this book a lot when I design fans on electronic systems. All other similar books whether on HVAC or thermal design of electronic systems did not discuss these topics in enough detail that I could apply the information to practical design. I found this book to be very practical for actual designs and I disagree with other reviewers who said that it was too theoretical. Great book.

Most of the solutions provided by the book are differential equations or a bunch of formulae that has nothing to do with solving a real life engineering solution. It may give you some concepts but it won't help you solve any real problem.

A good reference source to search for other more specific books and papers but not enough practical data to do the design calculations I was hoping to find.A good starting point for an HVAC novice.

"One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1992""This is brilliant stuff, both in its broadness of sociological scope and its voluminous collection of data from a vast number of sources in the three cities."---Scott Lash, The Times Higher Education Supplement"A very significant book indeed. . . . A systematic detailed analysis of the three largest urban economies in the advanced world."---Peter Hall, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research"[A] high-powered and at times horrific book. Sassen shows how dangerously city life has been affected by the influx of employees of the multinational firms which move into major cities and virtually colonize them, riving even greater wedges between the rich and poor." (The Observer)"A landmark study in the political economy of cities."---Anthony King, Newsline"The most detailed and sophisticated anatomy yet published of the functioning of the new producer services sector in the global economy."---Mark Levine, Urban Affairs Quarterly"The implications of Sassen's research . . . are sobering."---Rudolf Klein, Times Literary Supplement"An exciting and persuasive work. Sassen aims to - unpack the concept of "the city" (p. xviii) - as a unit of analysis in sociology and economics from a global perspective. The scope of this endeavor is quite staggering and she has to bring an number of different fields under the same conceptual umbrella in order to capture the elusive character of 'the city'. Her method is the painstaking analysis of a huge amount of data from a vast array of sources. This might seem unnecessary to some people who are more interested in bold visions of the future á la Manuel Castells or Antonio Negri. The thing about Castells or Negri though is that you need a leap of faith to interpret the world according to their views. Sassen is more boring to read but one can always rely on her providing the data leading up to her conclusions. This is crucial to anyone wanting to take a stab at the interdisciplinary phenomenon of the global city and use availible data for comparison. The thorough research foundation of the book makes it easy to link the issues to areas that otherwise would be quite far apart such as urban planning and service management. Personally I think the most important message is that place and location matters maybe even more nowadays than it used to when production and consumption was explicitly bound by the physical limitations of our world. In all I think that this book is a must read for anyone even remotely interested i urban matters. It's a bit tough to get through though and the visual presentation of the data could have been better, hence rendering the book a four rather than a five star grade.

This book is a profound empirical assessment of the changes that have taken place in the world economy since the sixties and the emerging role of core cities therein. One of the more significant changes in the world economy has been, according to the author, that manufacturing activities have been spatially dispersed while at the same time production-related services such as finance, accounting, and management have been spatially centralized. It is this 'combination of spatial dispersion and global integration [that] has created a new strategic role' [p. 3] for such cities as New York, London, and Tokyo. They have become global cities, i.e., 'postindustrial production sites' for a variety of command functions that integrate the global economy in the post Bretton-Woods era. An immense volume of data is presented to substantiate the hypothesis that these three cities, diverse as their historical, cultural, political and economic settings are, have undergone similar transformations: their economic base has shifted from manufacturing to services, in particular to producer services (chs. 5,7); agglomeration economies in favour of these global cities induced the urban hierarchy to become more top-heavy in the U.S., Great Britain, and Japan, respectively (ch. 6); and their urban social structure is characterized by increasing income and employment polarization since there is complementary expansion of jobs at the top-level and in the informal economy (chs. 8,9). Quantitative indicators, almost by definition, do not suffice to vindicate such far-reaching conclusions. Some of them rely on a questionable notion of what is normal, e.g., the indicators of these cities' 'disproportionate share' in worldwide capitalization of equities, due to their stockmarkets, or the 'overrepresentation' of the financial industries' assets and income in these cities [pp. 171-179]. But what is normal about the value of equities and banks' assets being proportional to city size? Other indicators do not necessarily support the hypothesis forwarded. The conclusion that 'the salient difference' between the three global cities and other major cities 'is the extent of concentration of the producer services and finance' [p. 326] is undermined by the observation 'that the producer services as a whole have grown rapidly over the last decade and that they have grown more rapidly in the countries as a whole than in these cities' [p. 138]. The evidence thus suggests that the 'salient difference' may be a temporary phenomenon and can hardly serve to characterize global cities in general. However, these are minor objections against some empirical arguments in favour of the Global City hypothesis. The author, Professor of Urban Planning at Columbia University, provides much more qualitative and quantitative evidence to substantiate her case. It is the outcome of work for years, in collaboration with an impressive number of other reserachers and institutions. And apart from the attempt to empirical verification, there is also a theoretical framework which supports the Global City hypothesis. The study contributes to an emerging literature on' the social geography of advanced economies' [p. 251] in the classical tradition of political economy. It deviates from orthodox classical or Marxist theory in that the iron law of falling profits is modified by the notion of capitalist 'regimes' or 'models of growth' which are able to restore profit-generating opportunities on a global scale. Fordism has been the last fully articulated regime, charcterized by 'capital intensity, standardization of production, and suburbanization-led growth' [p. 331]. The present work on global cities thus amounts to search for the new 'form of economic growth' and its sustainability [p. 12], based on speculative finance, shift to a service economy, and inner city growth. Even if one does not share this theoretical background and the preoccupation with questions of how durable a particular phase of capitalism is, SASSEN's book proofs tiffs perspective to be a useful device to focus a study of rather complex issues. Moreover, there is abundance of material which should be of interest to the more orthodox-minded economist. Just to mention two examples: the paradox of financial market deregulation being motivated by the need of governments to finance ever larger deficits [pp. 88, 118]; or descriptions of processes in global labor markets [p. 31 ] and urban economics [p. 126] which extend COASE's logic of the firm, though not mentioned, to new fields of study. This is clearly an outstanding book, an authoritative study of the subject and yet stimulating reading for further theoretical and empirical research on major cities and the world economy.

This is a sad book. History was very unkkind to this woman. Just when she thought she completed here masterpiece, a book that was supposed to ensure her tenure and fame and all the things that a sociologist may want, everything blew up in her face. Her theory in the original version went like this; Why oh why are there huge concentration of functions in Tokyo, London, New York, when so much IT allows easier communication and remote office and all that? Why do these cities grow, when all the production and other functions gets shipped off to backwater countries?Well, she said, IT allowed the separation of production and management/development. That's why managers remain in cities with their high pay, while actual sweat work goes to third world child labor under measly wages. But why did the cities grow bigger? Well, because cities are the new production centers. Management and stuff requires a lot of legal services and accountants and other services etc that are much easily available in the cities. That's why all those management stuff accumulated in the city. But aren't those activites just leeches to the actual job? They don't create any new value, do they? Aha, she says. But they do! Look at all those financial innovations, like hedge funds and derivatives and stuff! Look how much money they are making! They are not leeches, they are creating new values. You gotta throw away your old ideas about the economy! Only cities can produce that sort of new financial products, and that's why London, NY, Tokyo are growing! There was another brownie point. Her theory went very well with shallow anti-globalism arguments. Managers stay in NY/London with high pays, while at the factories half way around the globe, workers suffer forever under low wage. But exactly when the first edition came out, everything changed.First was the collapse of the Japanese economy, that took down Tokyo with it. Her theory had nothing to prepare or explain this. What happened to the new production? What happened to all those financial innovation? Why didn't that work in Tokyo? In the book, Sassen tries to answer this using various ad-hoc excuses, but the more she does it, the less convincing the original proposition becomes. So it wasn't THAT important, after all? All those theories of yours were only subordinate to those other stuff that you never mentioned before? And yes, what about those innovations? Collapse of LTCM and huge hedge funds etc. since the first edition made finance less glamorous. Arbitrage does increase some efficiency of the market, which does create some value. But they were not the major new "product" to sustain the world. Her theory about the separation of production and management wasn't so hot afterall. Look at Asia, look at China! Concentration of production functions REQUIRED many management and design / development functions to go along with them. Also, the factories did make the workers richer, and as a result, much of Asia and China really became better off. There are dicrepancies, and differences in earnings, but its nothing like what Sassen had described. It's amazing that NOTHING of here original theory remained. In this second version, she tries to pick up the pieces, but they are too completely destroyed to be picked up, and the effort is almost painful to read. I wonder why she even bothered with the second edition. It's not a book worth salvaging in 2001, and it's hardly worth reading, except as a sad but amusing look back at the strange ideas of the past.

Outdated material but there are a few good schematics that can help if you get lost with reassembly. Some of the cleaning tips are helpful as well. Nothing in this book is mandatory for a Z owner.

Photos are all black & white and not very good quality

Very useful information. I have a couple of complaints about the book:1. The binding is weak. Pages come loose from the binding and fall out of the book.2. The photos are too small and often too dark to make out detail. The caption will say to look at such-and-such and you can't see it.3. A suggestion for future editions. One of the main reasons I loved "How to Keep Your VW Alive" was that, unlike every other manual including this one, the author would tell you exactly what tools were needed so that you could crawl under the car with precisely the right wrench in hand. That is a real timesaver.

This book is great if you have an early Z car and need some pointers on how to restore/refresh your Z. A good mechanic would figure a lot of this out by using the factory repair manual, however there are tips and tricks here that the author gives you based on his hands-on tear down and rebuild that will save you time, money and effort in your pursuit of the perfect Z car. Some of the info is outdated but that's to be expected with anything in print. Updates on his info can always be found with a Google search.

THE go-to book on how to restore your Z car! Easy to follow steps. This is a no brainer.

helped me with my Z

I had a copy from before and used it on a Datsun Z Car and gave the old copy to the buyer of that car. I wanted another copy to possibly work on another car.

a great source of knowledge, tips, and pictures! came plastic wrapped and in great condition. thank you so much!
