Although I have been a classical pianist for over 10 years, I have always had a desire to learn jazz. I've taken lessons from several teachers but have never been able to effectively grasp the concept of improvisation and harmonization. Improvisation in classical music is non-existent. With that being said, this book has been a life changer. It should be known that this book is definitely not for beginning musicians. Although it briefly goes over chords in the introduction, if you are brand new to music, I would not recommend this book. However, since I bought this book with some sort of background knowledge on music theory, it made it slightly easier to comprehend. This book is quite advanced and may seem tedious at times, but this is only because it goes into such great detail. Even though I was frustrated at times trying to grasp all the information, I stuck through it and learned so much. If I can go through this book from cover to cover, so can you!

I can only assume all of the positive reviews are from people who bought a printed version.I purchased the kindle version of this book and it is basically useless. You would think that Berklee would have the resources to hire someone who knows how to produce a kindle book.This "eBook" is basically a PDF which cannot be used on a phone or tablet unless you have really "really" good eyesight.I have produced a number of books for sale on Amazon and our customers would be furious if we did this, and rightly so.To be fair, when I view it on my desktop, the actual content looks good, I was going to print the book out, but the resolution is fuzzy. This would not be an issue if it were just words we were talking about here, but reading fuzzy music notation just isn't worth it.If you zoom in on the staffs, they attempted to use numeric notations and you have no shot at actually reading the notation even with the best of eyes.I was really looking forward to reading this book, but it simply isn't worth the frustration.

There's a lot to take away from this book if your an intermediate music dude.Each chapter is a different existing idea in jazz that's worth writing down outside the book to look into via youtube or wherever else. However, even without other sources(for me anyway) i was able to understand the ideas clearly. ideas which i'm very grateful for.secondary/extended dominants, tritone subs, and modal interchange, constant structures, diminished chord functions. Really Cool Stuff.my one critique i guess is that it's kind of hard to get passed the heady/indulgent vernacular. the worst is in the beginning and it just feels like the authors are actually trying to avoid giving these ideas to folks outside academia. just feels like that anyway, might be reading too much into it.i'm self taught when comes to theory stuff and if you think you wanna try to discipline yourself, this book can help. i recommend it.

I was struggling to understand & learn the fundamentals for jazz harmony, trying to stick together many bits of information coming from multiple different books. This book has a very solid structured approach and teaches you everything you need to now step by step. As a person who have already bought and tried many books from Amazon, I would highly recommend this one. Note that this book is not for complete beginners, you are already expected to have good music theory fundamentals.

This book is helping me a lot, despite the fact that I don't write any jazz music at all. I focus in pop and electronic. I am self-taught and I consider myself a medium level in piano playing. Since the music I make doesn't use big chords such as nine, or 10 etc I just jump these sections when they come up. I make my best to learn everything up until 7 chords on each chapter. Sometimes I have problems in reading the music notation but, then I read more than once their explanations or throw the scale on google and I can understand perfectly the notes they are showing on the staff. However, they do show in most cases, which notes they are using to form the chords for people who can't read music, but as you move forward these become scarce.I also feel that the major scale section is so much easier to follow up. Feels like they put more effort there, giving you a more detailed insight than on the minor scale harmony chapter, and this is a throwdown for me because I like minor scales better than major scales. Basically they force you to understand properly the majors before you deep into the minors and this is driving me nuts. I wanted to dominate the minors first! heheAnyways no regret with this book and I wish they could release this type of book directed exclusively for pop music or other genres cos it is super useful.

This is a great book if you are into the real inner workings of tonal music. Many folks learn basic chords and scales in order to improvise.This book however is hard core tonal theory. It covers things like chord function, arranging, voice leading and exceptions to common rules.a 'must buy' for cats

I am a Berklee Alumni and I bought this book as a self study refresher. Very good for that purpose. I intend to keep it on my shelf along with all of my old notebooks as a reference. Well written and well organized. To get the most out of this book you should have a basic knowledge of music theory.

Comprehensive. Understandable and well written lessons. Essential information for any serious jazz or contemporary musician or songwriter. The insight provided here will provide a lifetime of tools and inspiration. This is one of the three best music education publications I own. Highly Recommended.

My 12 year old daughter just started her period this summer. She was away from home visiting family, which makes me sad that I missed the first one. I went online that night and found this book. I read the reviews, and the comments about the content being inappropriate. One reviewer mentioned that she was appalled by a section that informed the reader that you could get pregnant if semen is introduced into the vagina by any means, such as a finger. While it might make us uncomfortable as parents to think about our sweet girls doing anything of the sort, the fact is that it happens. I for one would rather have her know the risks and avoid them, than keep her blissfully ignorant while she ends up pregnant because she "didn't know". They say you're supposed to have "the talk" by the time they are 8 years old now as it is. Now that she's able to get pregnant (cuz let's face it thats what periods are for) I want her to know. Keeping her in the dark isn't going to do her any favors, and telling her the truth won't hurt her.So anyways I bought the book and had it overnighted to her at my mom's house. My mom said when she handed her the book she rolled her eyes and was like "Oh God". But she sat down to read, and did not put it down again until she had read it cover to cover. She told my mom, that was a REALLY good book, it had a lot of good information in it. It also has a little log in the back for her to track her cycle.I'm comfortable in my choice to get her the book. Now I know she knows, and what she knows is the truth and not hearsay from other teenage girls or boys. You know they talk about it right? And they act on it younger and younger these days? Don't you want them informed?

I feel very compelled to write a review after reading the top-rated comments by panicked mothers. Here is my story:I read this book when I was 10. I borrowed it from my friend, whose mom was a bit more hands-off than mine. I remember using it with my girlfriend, and a mirror, to find where our vaginas were. I didn't use it to masturbate. It didn't make me lose my virginity earlier. It just gave me the kind of no-nonsense ILLUSTRATED, not photographed, depictions of what I had to expect in the coming years. I loved this book because instead of trying to shelter me, it gave me all the best information and helped me make well-informed decisions.I felt compelled to review this book not only because I thought it was great, and memorable FIFTEEN YEARS later. But also because these panicked mothers, who are worried about their daughters being "too young" to learn about these things, clearly haven't been to a middle school in recent years. Children--tweens--are having sex. At 11, before they even need The Period Book, and at 13, when that tidbit about the fingertip's worth of sperm causing impregnation could be vital, life-changing information. That was never me, but hey! I read the Period Book when I was 10. So I knew better...So don't hide this book from your kids. Because they're almost not kids. And even as kids, behind your very backs, they're probably doing adult things. This book promotes body-literacy; it doesn't change the innate nature of your girls, or negate the moral compass you've instilled in them. As parents, don't you want to give your child THE BEST CHANCE to make good decisions? If so, get her this book.

I liked it a lot. Got it for my 9 year old niece.The only drawbacks are that, because it is meant for a young audience and meant to reassure and educate without scaring, it does not cover two things I was hoping for.It only very briefly touched upon non-heterosexual feelings, and while it did so positively, it was little more than a passing comment. Gender and sexuality fall on a spectrum and can be fluid, I felt it needed a more in depth take on that. But still, it’s not necessarily negative on the subject, rather than lacking.Same issue with health concerns. Endometriosis runs in my family, and reproductive disorders are not uncommon among women in the US. While it touched on it briefly, the book does not adequately tell young girls how to differentiate between regular menstruel symptoms and those that are not, and when to be concerned. While I understand that the intent is not to scare, the first sign that something is wrong is pain. And a young girl complaining of pain that she is unfamiliar with, in regards to menstruation, is often dismissed as her being unused to her body’s changes. I felt that this book does not take severe menstrual pain seriously enough. And it should be taken seriously, as should young girls who say they are in extreme pain.Aside from those two points, this book was wonderful and informative.

This was my first Karin Slaughter book and I went into with a little trepidation based on some of the reviews I read regarding the content of the story and plot details. However, at the end of it all, I was glad I went ahead and read this book since it ended up being a very well written psychological murder suspense thriller.While the book did start off slowly, with establishing the backgrounds of Lydia, Claire and the disappearance of Julia and its effects on the family. But once the story and plot started moving, the pace and entertainment level ratcheted up. You become engrossed into the story and made you want to find out how everything gets resolved. While some of the details and content of the plot is disturbing (especially if you’re a female), it’s nothing so out there that I haven’t read with other thriller suspense novels and isn’t something that should turn you away from this book.Looking back on this read, while this is a murder suspense thriller, it’s more of a psychological thriller. That complaint I had earlier about the slow start and information building? It served a bigger purpose in that it established the foundation on which the suspense and thrill is built upon. Learning about Lydia, Claire, and their family before and after Julia’s disappearance made you emotionally invested in them and how dysfunctional they all became after the loss of Julia. Once you come to understand them, you in turn understand the severity of all the revelations that you come to learn about Julia’s disappearance and the personal nature of it. It’s where the tension and suspense comes from more so than from the actual crime as horrible as it is. And in the end, this is really a story about a family who has suffered greatly from a loss and the unknown status of a missing loved one. Without Slaughter writing a compelling family dynamic, the overall story wouldn’t have worked.While there are certain aspects of the story that I would question (e.g. the extent of the cover up and participants in a small town) as a whole I thought this was a smart, suspenseful and engrossing read. It was well-written and, aside from the beginning, was nicely paced. The book didn’t follow any kind of formulaic thread you would expect from a psychological thriller. While there is an overall disappearance/murder/conspiracy umbrella plot, its heart lays in the complex and complicated nature of a family who is still suffering the effects of missing a loved one and trying to find closure.

My review is not really needed, given all the similar reviews, but at least it will add to the weighting. I find Ms. Slaughter's writing mesmerizing. I have read most, if not all, of her books, and within minutes I am always immersed. I do, however, find the graphic violence hard to take, and agree with the reviewers who thought the in "Pretty Girls" it was over the top. About 3/4 of the way through I just stopped reading and looked at the end. I also agree that the plot was almost incidental to all the violence; I think the book was intended to focus more on the characters and what an early tragedy did to their lives than to be intricately plotted, but it didn't hold together well enough for me. Too much coincidence was needed to make the solution work. I also agree that at least some of the characters -- in particular the chief villain -- seemed implausible, as did the scope of the conspiracy and the failure of anyone to notice for decades that a serial killer was among them. Too bad - I really loved Coptown.

This book was a page turner, I couldn't put it down but I think the write ups should mention something about the subject matter. It's certainly not for everyone and I think that needs to be explained if possible without giving anything away. It's not for the faint hearted. We were going to read this for book club but I pulled it before most people started because I knew some wouldn't be able to read it. However I like I said I couldn't put it down as I wanted to see how everything turned out. If you enjoy Crime Scene Investigation episodes then you're good to go, but if you find that program disturbing then don't read this book.

This book was suggested to me by Amazon, most likely because I had read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. After reading the description, I thought I'd give it a try. All I can say is that if you enjoy reading about young women being tortured, mutilated, and murdered, this may be the book for you. I personally was horrified by the graphic details Karin Slaughter felt were necessary and even more so by her publisher for not having the book edited drastically. The story line was weak and the book repulsed me. I wanted to make sure Paul got his comeuppance; otherwise I would have thrown it away. I've never read anything by Ms. Slaughter before and am certainly not going to waste my time with her books again. There is too much good literature available to bother with a book this disturbing.

It started off so good then it went down a very dark path and kept getting worse. I wish I had never read this book, it was so disturbing. Do not recommend.

This is an expertly crafted novel that quickly takes the reader into the action and never loses momentum for the entirety of the book. The writing is descriptive, yet tight. The storyline is familiar, but fresh. The characters are complex and believable. This story is gritty, disgusting, intelligent, gripping, and shocking. I feel a bit like I did after reading Silence of the Lambs many years ago. It's that good.I honestly don't know what I just read; and I may need therapy now, but I can't wait to read more from this talented author!

I had to stop reading this book - because it relies on a stupid girl being stupid. Instead of using her money to hire someone to look into things, or talking to any one of the thousands of people she could have spoken to that weren't the 2 gross officers of the law, she goes herself into an obviously dangerous situation.

If the author wanted Shock and Awe, she got it. But she went far over the line. I did not finish it --would not finish it. Had far too many mental images than I wanted already. The details of the assaults and murder were depraved and evil in its purist form. One wonders what kind of person could even conceive of the ritualistic brutality of the character, much less write it down, edit it, proof it, and publish it. No thanks, I will never read this author again.

The book goes over different components of English grammar. All the questions are clear and have brief explanations in the back. The front of the book gives you guidance on how to connect on the internet to obtain more detailed video explanations and even more practice questions. I found the videos very helpful and useful. Highly recommend to anyone who is studding for the exam.

There's some great drink recipes in this book. They are perhaps the star, but there's a good variety of recipe types. There's drinks, desserts, soups, salads, and main dishes. A lot of the recipes are built on rice. It's got full color pictures and the text is quite interesting. The recipes are well written and easy to follow with very accessible ingredients. One recipe that we really liked was "Garlic Chicken." It was quite the keeper, the whole family liked it. Coconut Rice pudding is also a very nice recipe.This is a big book. Generally the recipes are nutritious and tasty, with lots of flavor built up from citrus and garlic, cumin, and Spanish paprika, but are not overly hot-spicy.

It was the recipe for the Cuba Libre cake that made me buy this book. I've got the Three Guys' first cookbook and use it regularly. The recipes work, the ingredients - most of them - are easily found in regular grocery stores, and hard to find ingredients come with directions for how to make a substitute.I'm not one to read a cookbook, but this one truly is a fun read. The commentary that comes with the recipes is engaging and well worth the time to read.No, I have not made the Cuba Libre cake yet. It's on my to be baked list.

I had their Cook Cuban book so why not buy this one. Filled with great recipes, some with twists! I love it...if my mom is not around to give me her recipe I reference these books. Very authentic and I love the way they include tidbits of Cuban life and culture lost to all of us except for when Mami or Papi would remember and recount the old days. My dad is from Havana, I can't wait to mention the ice cream shop referenced in the book and see him light up and recall those days. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

About the Author

Joel Paris, MD, is a Research Associate at the Sir Mortimer B. Davis-Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Since 1994, he has been a Full Professor at McGill University and served as Chair of its Department of Psychiatry from 1997 to 2007. He has supervised psychiatric evaluation with residents for over 30 years and has won many awards for his teaching. Dr. Paris is a past president of the Association for Research on Personality Disorders. Over the last 20 years, he has conducted research on the biological and psychosocial causes and the long-term outcome of borderline personality disorder. Dr. Paris is the author of 153 peer-reviewed articles, 11 books, and 36 book chapters. He is also Editor in Chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

I am a graduate student in counseling psychology and am doing research on Borderline Personality Disorder. I was almost dissuaded from buying this book by another review giving it only 1 star and making a series of charges against the book. However, I went ahead and bought it because it is reviewed by highly respected doctors in the field.I am not disappointed. Although I am only about 1/3 of the way through the book so far, I have skipped around and read throughout. It is a thoughtful synthesis of a difficult topic and makes a massive attempt to integrate the research, theories, etc. I am grateful that Dr. Paris has made the effort to put this book together.I am finding it completely readable and highly informative.

Simply, the best book on BPD I have ever read. A must for every single practicing psychotherapist around the globe.

This book is excellent and should be compulsory reading for all psychiatrists managing patients with borderline personality disorder. It constitutes a real step forward in the management of this condition. The author clearly understands this complex area of psychopathology and should be congratulated on his methodical and evidence based approach to this complex topic. It is a reference you will use frequently.

This is a very good book. Reads well and easy, not too technical but not for the lay reader. Paris is a very good writer, clinician and researcher, with a twist of well intentioned humor here and there, he does well in synthethizing a lot of research, although sometimes at the expense of being overly simplistic, for a very complex topic.I recomend this book to any therapist and researcher seeking to get a broad overview of the disorder, its symptoms, causes and modalities of treatment. However, when I say "broad overview" i really mean it. One of the weaknesses of the book is that it is too general and very inconclusive, lacking practical suggestions for treatment and research (as the title might otherwise suggest).All in all its perfect to get you in the research based, data driven, evidence based mindset of studying and treating bpd, however it will not be enough for actually doing this.

I am a student in a Counseling Master's program and I had a group presentation to do on evidence-based treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder. It has been awhile since I studied this disorder in depth, so I knew there was a lot of literature out there, but where do you start? This book was a lifesaver for me!! My presentation was during finals when I had little time, and certainly not enough time to sift through the gazillions of research studies of Borderline at my university's huge library. This book was clear, concise, and best of all it was actually easy to understand for someone that is not extremely well-versed in all of this (in other words, I am still at the beginning stages of learning the ins and outs of counseling and I still understood what was going on in this book). Also, the book was not a huge text, so I was able to read the majority of it and still get a wealth of info from it for my presentation. The book has charts/tables that go over all the major studies, and if nothing else, points you in the direction of where you should go if you have to find out more specific info (methods, procedures, specific findings of study). This is a great book to learn about the various methods of effective treatment for BPD. Borderline is a very challenging cluster of issues within one's interpersonal relationships, and this book helps to dispell where a therapist should start. Highly recommended if you need an overview of the effective treatment for Borderline!!

This is an excellent review of what has been shown to work and what clearly does not in the treatment of this awful disease. Unlike other books on BP that are aimed at practitioners and are so dense with jargon they are unintelligible, this one is accessible to people without a psych PhD. It should be very useful to families of BP patients in assessing the effectiveness of their loved one's treatment and therapist. I particularly appreciate the author's unequivocal condemnation of psychotropic drugs, which have not been shown to be of significant help for BP patients and often make things worse. I watched the pills wrench my beautiful, talented daughter from an adolescent depression into a manic breakdown and a horrifying descent into BPD, psychosis and personality disintegration. She is now in the earliest stage of recovery, thanks to a hard-nosed therapist (trained in object relations) and large doses of brain-supporting supplements. In fact, my one disappointment with Paris' book is that it doesn't sufficiently address nutritional therapies in recovering from BPD. I assume that good data just does not exist yet. My hope is that someone will be able to correct this glaring omission in the near future. Fish oil, anyone?
