Knowles', Holton's, and Swanson's The Adult Learner serves as a comprehensive overview of the field of adult education. Andragogy, in contrast to pedagogy, is a field that focuses on adult learning and everything that ensues. It is "any intentional and professionally guided activity that aims at a change in adult persons" (Location 1174). It does not merely translate pedagogical principles to an adult context, but it is an attempt to focus on the adult learner and "provide an alternative to the methodology-centered instructional design perspective" (Location 124). This book proposes and argues for six principles of andragogy: the learner's need to know, the self-concept of the learner, the prior experience of the learner, the readiness to learn, the orientation to learning, and the motivation to learn (Location 155). These core principles are set in the context of individual and situational differences, which are subject matter differences, individual learner differences, and situational differences. This is then set in the context of the broader goals and purposes for learning, which are institutional growth, individual growth, and societal growth (Location 164). As a result, this book is separated into three parts: part one focuses on the theory of andragogy, the second part then addresses the context that andragogy takes place, and the last part then elaborates on practice.The six principles of andragogy are a helpful guide for every educator to ensure maximum engagement, proactive learning, and benefit to one's students. Context is key for adult education, so the learner's past and present experiences bring multiple dimensions to their learning experience. Thus, "if education is life, then life is also education" (Location 748). Consequently the teacher assumes the most important role in adult education - he/she is the one who will determine if he/she will step down from the stage, and become a guide on the side, in order to become a co-learner with the students. This is the crucial step that must be taken, in order for adult education to thrive. Since I am constantly training adult leaders to lead groups of 3, 12, or 50 other adults, it is important that I am using andragogical principles, rather than pedagogical. Not only will andragogical principles benefit the learner, but it will also create a healthier context for discipleship.

I am an Instructional Systems Specialist and this book is one of my reference guides along with the Carey, Carey and Dick and Mager books​. The book has clear and coherent information for a curriculum designer who has to develop lessons for training and workforce development programs. I love this book and highly recommend for individuals who develop, design and evaluate educational and professional development programs for adults.

Very informative book on adult learning! I strongly recommend for anyone in Human Resource Development or higher education.

A little background: I am not a college professor or corporate HR director, so to some degree there are things in this book that were lost on me for that reason, HOWEVER...I have worked in the past as an instructor for adult learners (in corporate and other environments), and earned a degree in Journalism, so I do know something about good writing hopefully. I purchased this book to gain insight into the motivations behind adult learners. Why do some go back to college even when their job does not require it? What motivates them? How do they learn compared to teenagers, etc? What techniques are best in a classroom full of adults? And FWIW I have been able to glean some useful bits of information in these respects. But this book could be so much more, if the authors would simplify the writing style. Get out of your own way and tell the story! Let me explain further...My biggest problem with this book is that it reads like a college thesis. I always value and appreciate a well annotated work that references other respected works, however this book goes completely overboard. In some chapters, almost every page is a pulled quotation from another work or book. There are so many references as to be distracting to the reader IMO. The original point being discussed (and its relevance to the person teaching adults), is often lost and you have to go back and read again so you haven't wasted your time.The information itself is sometimes helpful and enlightening, but buried among wordy descriptions, run-on sentences and frankly, verbal pomp. And though I recognize this book is geared towards those in HR development (companies that teach their employees IOW), there are clearly parallel lessons to be learned for anyone teaching adults, regardless of the environment (work, leisure or vocational). This book is simply not approachable enough, though there are some very good nuggets of info to be found and applied to our work. You just have to dig and re-read more than anyone should have to, in order to process that information.

Not sure what to fully think about this book. It's not the greatest or worst...The HR material seems out of place and was probably added to broaden potential buyers.

This book is like a one-stop shopping guide to Adult education. It is so comprehensive that I doubt it leaves out one development in the history of adult education. My only warning is that the opening chapters which basically trace many theories of learning (both adult and traditional) are hard to get through -- it reads more like a research paper that summarizes every major educational theory since the beginning of time. But, if you don't want to know that much, you can simply skip these chapters and get right to the meat of the adult learning theories which are more appropos. For those who need a quick primer on learning theories, you'll love the first few chapters for their abundance of quick summary information. A useful guide to adult education.

All four books are wonderfully written. Each one stands on its own but reading them together gives better understanding of all characters involved.I always loved Nora Roberts books. This saga is no exception. The way she describes family dynamics, you feel part of that family or you want to be part of it.Each book covers one of the brothers that are not really brothers. They are connected by this ten years old boy, Seth. By helping him, they help each other. They find love, start new business, and above all they come back to family home, town where they grew up and change their lives because they agreed to help Seth.I think that there isn't a person that wouldn't enjoy jumping into lives of four incredible guys that struggle together, build the future together, and are intertwined together like no others.Really incredible four books.Buy it, read it, and be prepared to not being able to put it away till you finish.I wish for one more story, about Aubrey. That would be just cherry on top. Well, I can only hope.

I would recommend this book to everyone. There's always a resemblance to a character in every book. My heart just fell in love immediately. I'm one if 6 sibling. Having already lost my mother, father and beautiful sister in my life this book made me laugh, cry and most of all remember how important family is and how much it means to me. Very relatable for my life and loved it tremendously. Definitely going to share it with my family.

I had read all 4 books as they came out years ago. But, having bought two of NR's Irish trilogies to read on our trip to Ireland last year, I decided to buy the Kindle version of the Chesapeake Bay series to bring over this year. [We travel on a motorcycle, so taking a Kindle along means not having to trade of shoes for books when packing.] I honestly had forgotten how much I enjoyed these characters. The individual romances are excellent, but it is the whole family dynamic that really pulled me in. I love how the 3 adopted brothers -- so different from one another in many ways, but so alike when it comes to family loyalties and love -- made room in their hearts and in their lives for the newest troubled boy that their father had brought home. And, I especially loved that I got to see that boy, Seth, again as a grown-up finding his own way to love. All that is missing now are the stories of the next generation. Ms. Roberts, are you working on those??

I've always enjoyed reading Nora Roberts books involving siblings,but this is by far the best series I've ever read. I loved how she took 3 very different men,with very different stories and made them the close knit family that they were. Then throwing in Seth,the hurt little boy who wants nothing more than to know love and his place in the world. I loved most that Cameron,the quick tempered bad ass,Ethan,the quiet,thoughtful waterman,and Philip,the sophisticated businessman are all raising Seth. It starts out as a mere promise,an oath between brothers and then blossoms into a love that can't be broken.I loved all the books equally. I loved to read how each brother interacted with Seth,he's feelings on living with them...wanting nothing more than to be family to them. It was just a beautiful thing to read. Ms. Roberts also created strong women to go along with these strong men and it was wonderful to watch the relationships take flight.Finally,the series ended with Seth's novel. To know that he grew up and his brothers were older was great. You got to see the man he became b/c of them and how much his family means to him,the sense of pride they felt @ the person they helped to create. It's a wonderful series. All of the Nora Roberts series are fantastic but if you read only one series,let this be the one.

This is my Nora Robert's favorite. I love the Quinn brothers and I loved reading the story about each brother. It's an amazing feeling when you find a world that just consumes you. This world consumed me and didn't let me go until I finished it. It was simply wonderful to see Seth journey from childhood to adult.A family that isn't by blood but by choice.

I am an avid Nora Roberts fan. I own just about all of her books and enjoy listening to them in audiobook form. I only semi-wish that I was a first timer to her stories, then I could appreciate the audiobooks for what they are and not dislike them in any way for the pieces of the stories that they are missing. The Quinn Brothers is my favorite series from her. After reading the first three books I fell in love with all three men and the women they fell in love with and Seth. When I found out that Nora was writing grown up Seth's story I was more than thrilled. I always wonder what happens to her characters after they get their happily ever after, what their lives turn out to be and I had finally gotten my wish. Listening to their stories over again was wonderful, but again I felt there were important events left out of each. One most pointedly in Sea Swept. It's a moment between Cam and Seth that is really telling to how the boy is growing being with the brothers. Seth's story was told in full, which was great, as it should be. A good listen overall, but again I recommend the actual books if you really want the full impact of the stories.

I have listened to the unabridged version of these stories again and again from the library until I saw a deal that I couldn't resist. I now understand what unabridged means which these books are not. These books are a condensed version of the ones I know. They give the story but have left out pages of great dialogue. Romantic scenes. The spirit of the dad. I miss what was left out. Sigh....

An absolutely wonderful series of stories about 4 brothers. Each strong, vibrant, different in themselves adopted by one college professor and his wife. Who together molded them into the fine men they became. Overcoming obstacles from the past, finding love, forming tight family bonds, creating their own lives on the water.I thoroughly enjoyed reading each different story learning about each character in that particular book. By the time I was finished with all 4 , I was totally wrapped up in the lives of each in the little waterfront town. Sorry to have it come to the end.

This is just what I was looking for to use in my elementary PE classes. There is a strong push to incorporate literacy into our PE program, but it can be difficult to find a way to merge the two curriculums. This book does it for me! I will be using this with my K-2 kiddos as a way to create a discussion about inference and imagination while still talking about the importance of physical activity. Thank you so much to the authors for writing this book! Can't wait for the next one! :)

My students could NOT stop laughing during this book! As a teacher, I have so many "Back to School" books that I read at the beginning of the year...but a book about P.E. isn't something I have ever run across, and I'm so happy that I did! My students were able to make awesome connections with this book which made for a great read aloud. After reading it aloud, I loved seeing my students pulling it off the shelf to read on their own. I can always hear their little giggles when they read their favorite part, "Cut it out, Billy."

Another great book! My kids loved commenting on whether they have seen their PE teacher do some of the things the PE teacher did in the book. They loved laughing at the PE teacher in the book and my kindergartener commented on what rules he broke!!

Atlanta today is served by a single passenger railroad station known as Peachtree Station located about two miles from downtown. The station in turn is served by a single daily passenger train, Amtrak's Crescent, which has a daily run through the station en route to New Orleans to the South and Washington, D.C. and New York City to the North. Peachtree Station opened in 1918 and thus celebrates its centennial this year. When the station opened, the location was elegant, to complement the lovely architecture, but both station and neighborhood have suffered decline in the intervening years.I know Peachtree Station because I take the Crescent to Atlanta on trips to see my grandchildren. I know the platform, the long stairs leading to the terminal, the benches in the old waiting room, and the cabs awaiting the occasional passenger. With my lifelong love of trains and familiarity with Peachtree Station, I was eager to read this new book, "When Atlanta Took the Train" (2018) which offers a history of Atlanta's passenger rail service and passenger stations from pre-Civil War days to the present. Arcadia Publishing, the publisher of many books of American local history, published this new book and kindly sent me a copy to review."When Atlanta Took the Train" beautifully preserves the romance of train travel and the history of Atlanta's passenger trains. The book includes an informative text documenting the passenger trains, railroads, and stations that served Atlanta over the years. The book includes many images of trains, stations, tracks, railroad workers, and passengers. It also shows the changing city of Atlanta with its streets, buildings, industries, and people over the years. It was a delight to read this book, which captures a city and its trains, and includes in one volume a history probably not available elsewhere.The book is arranged in chapters covering the various passenger train stations that operated in Atlanta. Only the Peachtree Station survives. The book first covers the 1853 Union Station. Even before the Civil War, Atlanta was a railroad hub. General Sherman destroyed this station when he captured Atlanta in 1864. This book offers many fascinating images of this long-gone station.After the Civil War, beginning a slow economic recovery, Atlanta became home to another Union Station, the Union Depot of 1871. By the turn of the century, this station had become too small and outmoded, but it continued in service until 1930. Steinberg's book covers the long history of this station and of the trains and companies which used it.A small station called the East Tennessee, Virginia, & Georgia Depot served Atlanta from 1884 to 1895 but no known images of it remain. This book preserves the memory of the station and gives what information remains available about it.The most extensive chapter of this book covers Atlanta's magnificent Terminal Station which opened in 1905 in a structure designed by architect P. Thornton Mayre. Terminal Station took up much of the slack from the out-of-date 1871 station. At its height, it was home to 100 passenger trains a day. The station was closed in 1970 and, alas, demolished in 1972. The history of the station and of the many trains that served it are lovingly preserved in this book.In 1930, Atlanta became home to its third Union Station, located only blocks from Terminal Station, and the old 1871 station was gone at last. This Union Station too was a large, impressive structure home to many trains. It too succumbed to the decline in rail service. It closed in 1970 and was demolished shortly thereafter. Its history is preserved in this book.The final station discussed in the book, and the only passenger station still operating in Atlanta is the Peachtree Station, which had a substantial history before Amtrak took over passenger service and which now services Amtrak's one passenger train through Atlanta. I discussed Peachtree Station at the outset of this review. The book concludes with a short chapter showing old passenger train stations in the Atlanta suburbs, some of which remain standing and some of which have been destroyed, and a brief chapter on excursion trains which sometimes operate in the Atlanta area.I loved learning about and seeing images of the long history of passenger rail service in Atlanta during an era when the passenger train was a critical part of the community. The story seemed to lag in quite a few places...or perhaps I just wasn't in the mood. However, the fast paced action at the end did not disappoint. While I had determined about mid-way through not to read any more of this series, the action-packed ending was a real cliff hanger that makes you want to read on. Really, my grandson liked the first book and I wanted to keep up with his reading of the series. It is awkward to place a reading audience with the boy-girl relationships of the Electroclan characters; innocent enough for younger readers...pretty silly for older readers. The first book was okay for advanced younger readers, although I was never keen on the torture. I did not care for this second book at all for the younger age group. The torture against humans imprisoned by the evil Elgen reached a new high and had gotten pretty sinister, graphic, and violent. Definitely would not recommend it for ages under middle school, and with intermediate readers it depends on the sensitivity of the reader. In all fairness, I concede that it is quite possible that the generation gap is showing up big time here in my thinking. Young readers today are an entirely new breed because of the prevalent exposure to violence in our culture. Concerned parents/grandparents who want their children to remain sensitized against violence should read the series first.

This is the best book of the 3 Michael Vey books so far. The plot is more developed, the characters seem more real, and they are certainly more interesting in the ways their powers are used, and they are still teenagers, maturing and getting to be more complex. The non-electric teens are well drawn and add an interesting aspect as we ordinary humans can relate to them and are proud when they make significant contributions to overcome evil. The absolute best scene in all the three books is the lowering of the bound Michael into the rat pit to be eaten, but due to the enhancement of his powers through his friends and his own courage, he just blows away all the bad guys who are gleefully watching his upcoming torture and death. It is the ultimate revenge scene when he just melts through everything, wipes out the rats, throws lightening balls at Hatch and company, and just kicks butt, destroying the whole electric factory. That scene will definitely make it into the movie. It is made for Hollywood! The one thing that seems a little unbelievable to me is that so many thousands of men acting as guards, who are misused and abused by Hatch, just never rebel. Yes, they fear for their lives and perhaps their families, but I don't believe that humans can put up with tyranny for so long with no cracks in their loyalty to the villain. This is a much better book overall than the first one. Better plot, characters and creativity.

Richard Paul Evans has created a wonderful tale around some great young heros. The book goes a little darker as well does Dr. Hatch, who is bent on Michael's destruction. Michael and his friends are also growing up and taking on a lot more responsibilites. They are learning that their actions have consequences. This one will tests their friendships and their spirits. This series is great for struggling readers who hate to read but are learning that books can be as enjoyable as a video game or a movie. I use the hard copy as well as the audio with my students and it a great pare up. My students have read the first book, and loved it, I'm sure that they will love this one just as much. Go Electro Clan!

I liked this book, BUT, please note, don't read this book right before you are going to eat. There are some icky descriptions that totally grossed me out and made me loose my appetite! They did pertain to the story and plot and actually developed it, but it was still really gross and they are throughout the entire book. ewe. This is a 4½ stars for me.I liked how the characters are developing and how they work together. The plot was also good. It's sorta like a Jame's Bond movie with teenagers starring in it.They really need to make a movie out of this book! I've heard that many have been inquiring about the rights to this series from the author...Also, it will be difficult to wait a ::whole:: year to hear what happens next. Richard Paul Evans, please write even faster than you already are! A whole year is faaaarrrrr too long to wait!I have tons of other thoughts, but they contain spoilers and are mentioned below if you scroll. If you haven't read this, please skip these spoilers.Here are my spoilers and thoughts (please skip if you have not read this book):Okay, I loved this book, but I have a few questions:1. Once the main group (minus Michael) escapes the compound in Peru, how come Elgen didn't send out any guards to chase them in the jungle? I mean, the Elgen really would love to get their hands on all those people and have a serious interest in punishing them all for various reasons, it seemed weird that the Electroclan could just rest right by the pipe they escaped from. They sure had no problem sending 1,000+ guards out into the jungle to try and capture Michael when he escaped...2. I would have liked to have seen more about Michael's magnetic powers. I don't feel like he was able to develop them very well and wondered how he made himself stick and unstick with the magnetism, which was huge in saving him since it bought him some valuable time when he was being lowered into the bowl (along with his friends sabatoging the water on the compound that effected the cooling). His powers just did what he needed them to and I had the feeling he truly had not fully understood them or perfected them.3. I ::hate:: rats. They are so gross, so this really grossed me out in the book. So, how did they get the rats from the bowl to the hallway where the Electroclan were at? AND, how was Elgen planning on getting the hoards of rats back into the bowl after they attacked the Electroclan? Since the Elgen assumed the rats would prevail, they must have had a plan to get them back into the bowl - unless it was a desperate emotional decision Hatch made out of wanting to beat Michael so badly. It was interesting to me that Hatch would take a risk like this, and risk having the rats take over the entire plant for not having a way to harness them and get them back to their caged bowl. I guess psycho villains sometimes make emotional decisions stemming from the heat of the moment and fear of being compromised...4. How the heck did they clean up all the fried rats? awk! AND how were there ::that:: many rats to still be in the bowl after the whole sprinkler incident in the hallway? Supposedly they had one million rats, but still, that had to have taken out a few hundred thousand rats for the hallway incident. ewe, gross. I can't even begin to imagine the smells... so gross. I'm assuming that they didn't clean up the fried rats, since the whole compound was going down, they probably abandoned it. It still grosses me out thinking about it.Now for predictions/thoughts for the next book in the series:I think the Amazon tribesmen will let Michael go. I don't think he will dwell with them forever in the jungle. I think they are just helping him, and if they want to keep him, he will still get away. I think he will be reunited with the Electroclan in book 3, but I think it may take a minute for him to get out of there. I also wonder if the Electroclan really got to their escape helicopters... we never heard a helicopter other than the four Elgen helicopters that were brought down. Hopefully the group is waiting for Michael and I would expect that Ian can see him and tell what is happening, so they can rescue him. Ostin prolly speaks Amazon tibestalk...Hatch was more psycho/evil than ever, and I suspect he won't be caught by Michael for a long time - to keep the series going. What good is this series without a proper antagonist? I'm very curious to see what backlash the Board has for Hatch after having the Peru plant melt down due to Michael and his friends. I also wonder how successful Hatch will be when his unlimited supply of money runs out from his only source, the Board. Will the evil Electric kids still want to stick with him, even if he has no money since the Board will clearly not be backing him anymore? Money seems to have been the main motivation of the evil electric kids to stay with Hatch. They might stick with him, since he's such a wack-job with his mind control he has over them. It will be very interesting to see if the Board gets Hatch and has can discipline/kill him for what he has done... Obviously the Board will be seeking Hatch in the future books...I'm hoping that the Electroclan will be able to meet the people behind "the Voice" after what they did to help them in this book (destroying the biggest plant the Elgen has, and discrediting them but ruining their newest business venture of cheap, rat power) - I think the Electroclan deserve to meet these people, especially since they aided their cause big time by bringing down Elgen. I'm very curious to see who this secret organization is and how they are funded. They apparently have an endless supply of money like the Elgen do. I also hope that the people behind "the Voice" get the Electroclan's families out of Meridian, ID and into some sort of witness protection program. Otherwise, I can see this series having the same plot over and over of trying to rescue various family members of the Electroclan.I think there is a possibility that the Electroclan will become spies for "the Voice" and that they will be on a never-ending battle to catch Hatch and the evil Electric kids. I also think there is a strong possibility that Hatch will find another evil, villian organization to work for that will help him try to gain his goal of world power and dodge the wrath of the Board that he had worked for 20+ years, especially since the Board will want to totally kill him.Last of all, I seem to vaguely remember it was mentioned that other Electric children exist in the world besides the kids created from the machine from Elgen in California. It will be very interesting to see their role in future books.

I love these books that show how things used to be! Images of America publishes the funnest books any red blooded historian can ask for. I have several by IOA and they are all keepers. I recommend them all.

Really interesting book for people who love getting a glimpse of what life was like when the world was a classier place to live in. Warning: you'll find yourself wishing you could check in to these places when you see the photos. Great book for any history buff, especially those who know Seattle.

I was fascinated to read about how the old hotels got their beginnings. Robin is masterful is weaving photos and stories and colorful individuals together. She brings history alive!

I will be on cruise to Norway and Iceland in late July and early august. After reading this book I am eagerly looking forward to my visit to Iceland. Mr. Hall's writing was exciting a with a passion for the country and its culture and history.

Bought this as gift for Grand son. My daughter tells me he spent most of Xmas day studying the book for trip to Iceland early this year.

Awesome. Just what we needed for our upcoming trip.

The book came on time and is what I expected.

Really helped plan our trip.

It did list a few nice things to do but it would have been better if it was payed out by area. That is the best way to explore Iceland

Useless book. No details, just general statements.

This is a great little "to-do list" book. A quick read and not boring at all. Easily skim through the different chapters to find what types of stuff interests you and then individual destinations are quickly distinguishable with enough information to help you make a decision on whether you'd want to see it without too much description to drag it out. Very well done.
